Tarangire,

Tarangire is northern Tanzania's elephant stronghold, defined by an enduring river, ancient baobabs and broad seasonal gatherings of game. Close to Manyara and the Ngorongoro highlands, it gives the northern circuit a distinctive, spacious opening or finale.

As surrounding water disappears, elephants, plains game and predators converge along the Tarangire River, creating the park's signature dry-season concentration. Baobab silhouettes and quieter southern sectors give the landscape a character wholly its own.

Game drives lead the experience, with walks and night drives available only where current permissions, concession rules and conditions allow. Cultural visits should be respectful and locally arranged, and birding remains rewarding well beyond peak season.

June–October

The long dry season

June–October is the principal dry season, when the Tarangire River becomes the most reliable water source across a wide area. Elephants, plains game and predators concentrate nearby, making wildlife easier to find, though the park is busiest and sightings remain natural rather than assured.

November–May

The green season

November–May disperses wildlife as water returns across the landscape, but brings lush scenery, migrant birds, newborn animals and far fewer vehicles. These months suit travellers prioritising birding and atmosphere over the dry season's concentrated elephant gatherings and easier viewing.

When is the best time to visit Tarangire?

The dry season, roughly June to October, when the elephant herds and plains game concentrate along the river; the green season (November–May) is quieter and superb for birding.

Its permanent river is the dry-season lifeline for a large landscape, drawing some of the biggest elephant concentrations in Tanzania to its banks.
