Is a luxury safari in Tanzania right for you?

A luxury safari in Tanzania means scale and private land: small camps on concessions such as the 350,000-acre Grumeti reserve, a lodge on the Ngorongoro Crater rim, and the remote southern parks. Most of the spend is in the camps on private land and the charter flights to the south. Time the north for the Mara River crossings (July to October, most reliable August and September) or the southern Serengeti for calving (late January to March), and plan nine to fourteen nights; it rewards a second safari, or a first with two weeks to spend.

Start here

You have seen the migration on film, and you want it without a ring of vehicles around the river. Or you have already done a safari in Kenya, and you are ready for somewhere bigger and quieter, where the day's drive is measured in hours of empty plain rather than minutes.

That is Tanzania's version of a luxury safari. The Serengeti alone covers 14,763 square kilometres, and the best use of money here is placement: the right camp, in the right area, in the month the herds are there.

The detail

Tanzania is six different safaris, and the luxury is in choosing between them.

Private land versus the park. Singita runs five lodges and camps on the Grumeti concession, where walking, night drives and horseback riding are offered. The Grumeti Fund, a separate non-profit that works in partnership with Singita, runs anti-poaching patrols there with scouts drawn from nearby villages. Chem Chem, beside Tarangire, lists walking and night drives, and the southern parks add walking. Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater do not allow night drives. That changes the usual steer: Tanzania's private land offers the same freedoms as Kenya's conservancies, and the trade is distance, not permission. Kenya vs Tanzania sets the two side by side.

The north, timed to the herds. The two luxury windows are the river crossings (July to October, most reliable August and September) and calving in the south (late January to March). Camps beside the river book out early; operators say a year ahead for July and August. The great migration by month and best time to visit Tanzania hold the calendar, and Serengeti the place.

The crater, from the rim. &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge sits on the rim of a crater 610 metres deep with a floor of 260 square kilometres. The premium buys the view and a head start: a rim lodge can be on the floor early, before the day's vehicles arrive. The wildlife is the same from any lodge, and the crater service fee (US$295 per vehicle per descent) is paid either way. Ngorongoro Crater describes the descent.

The south, for a second visit. Nyerere and Ruaha have few vehicles and walking, but the herds are smaller and the days slower. They are a second-safari choice. Kokoko Camp in Ruaha has three tents for up to six guests, is booked on an exclusive basis, opens only in the dry season and takes children 12 and over. Jabali Ridge suggests guests of 12 and over.

Mahale and the chimpanzees. Greystoke Mahale sits on Lake Tanganyika and closes roughly from mid-March to early June, which is why the table says June to October. You reach it by light aircraft to an airstrip and then a boat of 90 minutes to two hours. Shared flights run on Mondays and Thursdays, so plan three or four nights. Chimpanzee trekking is for ages 12 and over. Rangers keep groups small (six visitors), limit you to an hour with the chimpanzees, keep you 10 metres away and ask you to wear a mask; those rules apply however much you have paid. Chimpanzee trekking explains what to expect.

What drives the cost. Camps on concessions charge for the land. Park fees are extra: the Serengeti's is US$70 plus VAT per adult per day. Charter flights to the south add the largest single cost.

Planning it with Nobu

Nobu designs Tanzania luxury trips as private journeys, and builds the light-aircraft and charter legs into the plan. Tanzania rewards placement more than almost any country: which area for which month, how long in each, and whether the south belongs in this trip at all. That is the work done around your dates. Plan Your Journey is where it begins.

05 /

Is it right for you?

Tanzania suits you if you want scale and a quiet plain, if you have around two weeks, and if you are comfortable with longer legs between camps. It is often the right choice for a second safari, or for a first with time to spare.

Choose something else if you have under a week: Kenya's compactness wins, and luxury safari Kenya is built for that. If children are in the party, minimum ages run from none to 12 and over, so read family safari Tanzania first. If the beach is the finish you want, luxury Zanzibar covers it. If gorillas are the aim, go to luxury safari Rwanda.

Journeys to consider

  • Tanzania, one chapter at a time — eight days and seven nights across northern Tanzania, best June to October and January to February. It is shorter than the nine to fourteen nights this page recommends, and can be extended. → See the northern Tanzania journey
  • Zanzibar, with nothing to rush — seven days on Zanzibar, the slow coast after a Tanzania safari. → See the Zanzibar journey
  • The Mara, unhurried — five days in the Maasai Mara, the Kenyan side of the same river crossings. → See the Mara journey

A few things worth knowing

Good questions.
Straight answers.

The details matter. Bring anything else into your planning conversation.

Is the crater rim worth the premium over a lodge outside the conservation area?

It buys the view and an early start on the floor. The wildlife and the US$295 per-vehicle fee are the same either way, so it matters most to travellers who want the crater at its quietest.

Will a private camp put me in the migration's path?

Camps are chosen by area and month rather than moved after the herds, so a good plan matches the two. No camp can promise where the herds are on a given morning.

How do you reach the south and Mahale?

By light aircraft: charter for the south, and a shared or private flight to the Mahale airstrip followed by a boat ride. Mahale in particular needs three or four nights because of the flight schedule.

Does a Tanzania luxury safari include walking and night drives?

Yes on private land and at some southern-park camps: Grumeti and Chem Chem list both, and some Ruaha camps offer them. No in Serengeti National Park or the Ngorongoro Crater.

Is the remote south a good first luxury safari?

Rarely. The southern parks have fewer large herds and slower days, which suits a second visit better than a first.
