Nyerere opens Tanzania's southern safari country on an immense scale, with the Rufiji River braiding through channels, lakes and sandbanks. Boat safaris, guided walks and game drives create a quieter, more immersive alternative to the northern circuit.

The river changes how safari unfolds: hippos surface beside boats, sandbanks invite careful observation and wildlife gathers along water away from crowded tracks. African wild dogs add particular conservation interest, though encounters remain naturally unpredictable.

The long dry season

June–October is the main dry-season window, when animals concentrate beside the Rufiji, lakes and remaining water. Walking conditions are typically better and heat more manageable, giving the widest choice of camps and reliable access, subject to current park and operator conditions.

November–May

The green season

November–May turns Nyerere green, with newborn wildlife, strong birding and dramatic skies. Heavier rain around March–May can restrict access, and some southern camps close during the wettest period, so routes and activities must be confirmed against current operations and conditions.
