Samburu protects an arid stretch of northern Kenya along the Ewaso Ng'iro River. Its dry-country species, including Grévy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Somali ostrich and Beisa oryx, create a striking alternative to the southern safari circuit.

The river forms a green lifeline through red earth, doum palms and rugged hills, drawing elephant, leopard and plains game toward its banks. Intimate sightings unfold against a remote landscape whose wildlife differs sharply from the Mara.

Community conservancies add camel-supported walks, night drives and respectful time with Samburu hosts where current rules permit. These activities depend on access and local arrangements, while the reserve itself remains strongest for river-focused game drives.

The drier seasons

Late June to October and December to February are the drier windows, when wildlife concentrates along the Ewaso Ng'iro, vegetation thins and tracks are generally firm. Dawn and late afternoon remain most comfortable in Samburu's year-round heat.

November

The green season

November's short rains and the longer March-to-May rains soften the semi-desert, support newborn animals and bring strong birding. Wildlife disperses when water is widespread, so sightings may require more patient tracking and can never be guaranteed.
