Laikipia is a highland mosaic of private and community conservancies north of Mount Kenya. Major rhino populations, rare northern species and flexible safari rules support walking, horseback riding and night drives alongside quieter, conservation-focused game viewing.

Working landscapes protect black and white rhino, Grévy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and wild dog while sharing land with livestock and communities. Low vehicle densities make the plateau feel personal, spacious and distinct from national parks.

Activities vary by conservancy and may include guided walks, riding, camel-supported journeys, night drives and off-road viewing. Every option remains subject to current permissions, access, guide assessment and the specific rules of the chosen property.

The drier seasons

Late June to October and January to February are drier, bringing firm ground for walking or riding and wildlife concentrated near permanent water. These windows generally support straightforward tracking, clear mornings and comfortable active safari days.

November–May

The green season

November to May brings greener plains, newborn animals, strong birding and often clear views of Mount Kenya, with fewer travellers. Conservancies cap guest numbers year-round, while exact activity access still depends on rainfall and current local conditions.

Is Laikipia a national park?

No — Laikipia is a region of private and community conservancies rather than a single park, which is why it allows walking, horseback riding and night drives that the national parks do not. Activity rules can change and differ by reserve, park, conservancy or community land; Nobu will confirm the current permission and operator arrangement before approval.

Why is Laikipia important for rhino?

Its conservancies run some of Kenya's most significant black and white rhino sanctuaries and breeding programmes, making the region a continental stronghold for the species.

What can you do in Laikipia that you can't in the Maasai Mara reserve?

Walk on foot, ride on horseback, drive off-road and travel after dark — all standard on Laikipia's private land but restricted in the national reserves.

How many days do you need in Laikipia?
