THE EXPERIENCE / WALKING SAFARIS

Step out of
the vehicle.

Tracks in the dust, an alarm call, the weight of the silence. On foot, the bush stops being a view and becomes a place you’re in.

THE WALKING CHAPTER

The bush,
at eye level.

A walking safari trades the long lens for the small wonders a vehicle drowns out.

Walks are led by expert, armed guides, mostly in the private conservancies around the big reserves, where walking is allowed. They last a few hours, morning or late afternoon, and move at the pace of curiosity: reading tracks, learning the plants the Maasai have used for generations, meeting the plains on their own terms.

Walking usually takes place in the conservancies rather than inside the main reserves. We’ll plan your journey around places where it’s allowed.

A MORNING ON FOOT

Listen first,
then look.

Most walks pair with game drives: the big sightings from the vehicle, the close ones on foot.

  1. FIRST LIGHT

    A briefing by the fire.

Coffee, a few simple rules from your guide, and out while the air is still cool.

  2. ON THE TRAIL

    Read the ground.

Fresh tracks, a dung beetle at work, a plant with a story. The small things become the main event.

  3. BACK AT CAMP

    Breakfast, earned.

Return as the heat builds, with the afternoon free and a game drive still to come.

THREE WAYS ON FOOT

Walk as much
as you’d like.

A morning walk and a multi-day expedition are very different things. Start with what you’d enjoy.

01

A morning walk.

A few hours out from a comfortable camp, with game drives for the rest of the day.

ONE BASE · A FEW HOURS
02

A walking expedition.

Camp to camp on foot over several days, for those who want to go further.

MORE ACTIVE · MULTI-DAY
03

Walks within a safari.

A walk or two woven into a wider journey, wherever the conservancies allow it.

WALKING · WIDER SAFARI

THE DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

A little thought.
A better journey.

A few things worth knowing before you set out.

How fit you need to be

Not very. Most walks are a gentle couple of hours, though basic mobility helps.

Where you can walk

Mainly in private conservancies. Walking is generally restricted inside the main reserves.

Your guide

Expert, armed and licensed, with a full briefing before every walk.

What to bring

Comfortable closed shoes and muted colours. We’ll send a full list before you travel.

BEFORE YOU GO

Good questions.
Straight answers.

Are walking safaris safe?

Yes. Walks are led by armed, licensed guides in small groups, with a full briefing, in areas where walking is allowed.

Can you walk inside the Maasai Mara reserve?

Walking is generally restricted inside the reserve itself, so walks take place in the surrounding conservancies.

Do I need to be very fit?

No. Most walks are a gentle couple of hours, though basic mobility helps.

How is it different from a game drive?

A game drive covers ground and finds the big animals. A walk trades distance for detail. Most journeys pair the two.
