Tanzania Safari
& Zanzibar

Tarangire, the crater and the Serengeti by road, then one flight to Zanzibar’s coast.

9–12 nightsSafari & seaTarangire · Ngorongoro · Serengeti · Zanzibar

The journey

The way west is long and dusty: Tarangire’s baobabs, the crater rim beyond Karatu, then the Serengeti’s open horizons.

Then there is no road back. A light aircraft leaves Seronera for Zanzibar, timetabled at 1 hour 40 minutes, and the Indian Ocean replaces the plains. Stone Town’s coral-stone lanes come first, then four nights on a lagoon coast.

Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar suits travellers with nine to twelve nights who want one visa, one country and a gentle end. The trade-offs are early starts, three road legs and a morning flight that needs two seats booked. With fewer nights, fly into the Serengeti; with none for the island, choose Tanzania Classic.

Parks first, then the sea, with one flight between them and every night shaped entirely on your terms.

Moments along the way

Dust first,
then salt water.

01

River days at Tarangire

In the dry months animals gather at the river, with baobabs overhead.

02

Into the crater

The floor lies 610 metres down; NCAA asks drivers to keep 25 m from animals.

03

Serengeti, unhurried

Wide grass, kopjes and a long afternoon; cats live here all year, though none is promised.

04

A morning at the airstrip

One last drive, then a light aircraft lifts from Seronera and the plains tilt away.

05

Stone Town after the dust

Carved doors, Forodhani Gardens at dusk and a rooftop supper once the dust is off.

06

The first swim

After days in a vehicle, warm water; on the east coast the tide table decides when.

Where you’ll stay

Each stay adds to the story.

Comfort runs from a simple Essential camp to a Private Collection retreat, and you choose the level. Serengeti camps sit inside the park, and the coast you pick shapes the island stays.

Your planner confirms each stay for your dates.

Good to know

The parks and the island,
in context.

Northern Tanzania’s safari circuit lies west of Arusha: Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area run by NCAA, then the Serengeti. Zanzibar belongs to Tanzania, and one e-visa covers both, so a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar trip stays in one country. Inbound insurance is bought once, for your first port of entry, here the mainland. Light aircraft link the Serengeti and Zanzibar, so the island adds a flight, not a day of driving.

Government advice, checked October 2026: the US rates Tanzania, Zanzibar included, Level 3, Reconsider travel (issued 31 October 2025); that nationwide advice applies to this route. The UK (page updated 9 October 2026) advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the border with Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, outside this circuit, and reports armed crime across Tanzania, including Zanzibar. The UK Air Safety List names Tanzania-certified airlines, which are banned from commercial services to, from and within the UK. Read both before travelling.

Malaria risk is high in all areas of Tanzania below 1,800 m, Zanzibar included; ask a travel clinic how that applies to each stop. Tanzania asks for a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from Kenya. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go

Pick your moment.
Not just a month.

Guidance only, for the northern parks and Zanzibar together: the right month also depends on your camps, your coast and what you want to see.

Jul / Main dry season

Dry parks, dry coast, busier camps

Usually dry across the parks and the island, with Tarangire’s animals keeping to the river. Camps fill up, so arrange the safari stays and island rooms together well ahead.

Broad seasonal guidance — not a forecast, availability calendar or migration promise. Picking a month sets it in your plan.
