Diani Beach

Why visit

After days of dust and golden light in the Mara or Amboseli, Diani is the exhale. The sand here is fine, pale and almost luminous, the reef holds the surf offshore so the lagoon stays calm and clear, and the palms lean in over the water as if they were placed for the view. It is the classic close to a Kenya journey — the bush and the beach in one trip, a short flight apart.

But Diani is more than a place to lie still. It is one of the most rewarding stretches of the East African coast for time on and under the water, with a reef that has been protected for generations and a fishing-village rhythm still humming behind the beachfront. You can dive in the morning, sail a dhow at sunset, and never feel hurried.

What to do here

The water is the headline. Diving and snorkelling over the reef bring reef fish, turtles and, in season, the chance of larger pelagics; visibility is generally clearest in the calmer months. Dhow sailing — a sunset cruise or a day under sail — is the coast's signature experience, unchanged for centuries. South of Diani, the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park off Wasini Island is one of Kenya's finest snorkelling grounds, with resident dolphins and clear coral gardens, reachable as a full-day excursion. Closer to shore, kitesurfing thrives on the steady monsoon wind, and the long, flat beach is made for walking at low tide. Inland, the coastal forest of Shimba Hills adds a half-day of elephant and sable country a short drive from the sand.

Best time to visit

The coast is warm year-round, but the most reliable beach window is December to March — hot, bright and dry, with the calmest seas and the best diving visibility. The long rains (April to June) bring heavier showers and rougher water, though prices ease and the coast empties. July to October is cooler and drier again under the southern monsoon, pleasant for beach time if a touch breezier. Getting there

The quick route is a light-aircraft flight to Ukunda (Diani) airstrip — UKA, around the corner from the beach, with direct hops from Nairobi (Wilson) and from the Mara and Amboseli airstrips — the easiest way to fly bush-to-beach without backtracking. Alternatively, fly into Moi International Airport, Mombasa (MBA) and transfer south by road and the Likoni crossing (allow extra time at the ferry).
