Diani is Kenya's best-known Indian Ocean beach, a long sweep of white coral sand south of Mombasa. Its reef-sheltered lagoon supports swimming, diving, snorkelling and dhow sailing, making it a natural beach finish after an inland safari.

The offshore reef calms the water and holds surf away from the lagoon, leaving pale sand and warm, clear shallows beneath leaning palms. Short flights from safari country make the transition from bush to beach especially easy.

Diani also supports active days: reef dives, kitesurfing, sunset dhows and full-day marine excursions toward Kisite-Mpunguti. Inland, Shimba Hills offers coastal forest, elephant and sable country within a manageable drive from the shore.

The drier seasons

December to March is hot, bright and dry, with calm seas and the clearest general diving conditions. This is the classic beach window, well suited to swimming, reef outings, sailing and an easy coastal finish after safari.

April to June

The long rains

April to June brings the long rains, heavier showers and rougher water that may limit marine activities. July to October becomes cooler and drier under the southern monsoon, remaining pleasant for beach time but often noticeably breezier.

Yes. The offshore reef shelters the lagoon, so the water is calm and clear; the main variable is the tide, which goes a long way out and shapes the day's swimming and snorkelling.

How do you get from the Maasai Mara to Diani?

The simplest way is by light aircraft via Nairobi to Diani's Ukunda airstrip, turning a long overland trip into a short flight — we time the connection so the beach feels like a continuation, not a journey.

Can you dive and snorkel at Diani?

Yes, on the reef directly offshore and, for the best snorkelling, on a day trip to the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park near Wasini Island to the south.

How many nights should you spend at Diani?

Three to four nights is the natural length to unwind after a safari; longer if the beach is the heart of the trip rather than the coda.
