Stone Town is Zanzibar's UNESCO-listed historic heart, a coral-stone maze shaped by African, Arab, Indian and European exchange. Carved doors, sacred buildings, merchant houses and a difficult trading history make it an immersive cultural counterpoint to the island's beaches.

A guided walk connects the Old Fort, waterfront, mosques, temples and merchants' houses while explaining the spice economy and the trade in enslaved people. Narrow, car-free alleys reward slow exploration and careful historical context.

Forodhani's evening food stalls return the town to the harbour after sunset, while spice farms and dhow sails broaden a short stay. Changuu excursions add old quarantine buildings and Aldabra tortoises, subject to current access and welfare standards.

The drier coast

June to October is cooler, drier and less humid, making long walks through the lanes more comfortable. December to February is warmer but largely dry, another rewarding period, although festive weeks can bring heavier visitor numbers.

March to May

The long rains

March to May brings humid downpours that slow walking and make the enclosed lanes feel warmer; November's short rains are usually lighter. Because history, markets and architecture shape the visit, Stone Town remains worthwhile when exposed beaches are less inviting.

It is one of the best-preserved Swahili coastal trading towns in East Africa, where African, Arab, Indian and European influences fused over centuries into a single urban fabric — its carved doors, coral-stone architecture and layered history earned World Heritage status.

How many days do you need in Stone Town?

One to two nights is enough to walk the old town, see the key landmarks and take a spice tour; most travellers use it as a cultural arrival or finale and spend the rest of their time on the coast.

What is there to do in Stone Town besides the old city?

Beyond the alleys, carved doors and slave-market memorial, the classic add-ons are a spice-farm tour in the hinterland, the Forodhani night food market, a dhow sunset sail, and a boat hop to Prison Island's giant tortoises.
