The journey

Zanzibar brings the old town and a choice of beaches; Mafia, south of Dar es Salaam, brings a marine park.

Two nights among Stone Town’s carved doors, three on a Zanzibar coast, then a flight through Dar es Salaam to Mafia Island, where days follow the boat: Chole’s ruins, reef snorkelling and, October to February, a chance of whale sharks.

Zanzibar & Mafia suits snorkellers and non-divers who want one island for history and another for open water, and accept a flight connection through Dar es Salaam. Divers can add dives. To choose just one, read our Mafia Island or Zanzibar guide.

Old town, shore and reef, with every flight, boat day and rest day arranged on your terms.

Moments along the way

Narrow lanes,
open reef.

01

Stone Town’s narrow lanes

Carved doors, shuttered shops and a sea breeze at the end of each lane.

02

Low tide on the coast

The lagoon drains, boats rest on the sand and the day slows to the tide.

03

A change at Dar

A short hop to Dar es Salaam, then half an hour on to Mafia.

04

Chole’s ruined buildings

A guided walk among the ruins of a Swahili-era trading island.

05

Whale shark season

From October to February, boats search for whale sharks; some days they find none.

A morning on the reef

Float over coral inside the marine park while your guide watches tide and weather.

Where you’ll stay

Each stay adds to the story.

Stone Town and the coast range from a simple Essential house to a Private Collection retreat. Mafia has only a few small lodges, so its choice is narrower; your proposal names what is open.

Good to know

Mafia Island and Zanzibar,
in context.

Mafia Island lies south of Dar es Salaam. Mafia Island Marine Park protects part of the surrounding archipelago, including waters around Chole Bay; confirm entry charges for the chosen lodge and activities. Whale sharks gather around Kilindoni Bay, with core habitat largely outside the park. Chole’s ruined trading settlement adds a shore visit between boat days. Zanzibar supplies a different setting: Stone Town’s historic streets and a wider choice of coast stays.

Government advice, checked October 2026: the US rates Tanzania Level 3, Reconsider travel (31 October 2025). The UK advises against all but essential travel only within 20 km of Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado border, and reports armed crime across Tanzania, including Stone Town and popular Zanzibar beaches. The UK Air Safety List names Tanzania-certified airlines, which are banned from commercial services to, from and within the UK. Read both before travelling.

Malaria risk covers Tanzania below 1,800 m, including Zanzibar and Mafia. Tanzania requires yellow fever certificates when arriving from listed risk countries, including Kenya. DAN’s minimums before flying after no-decompression air dives are 12 hours after one dive and 18 after repetitive or multi-day diving, for symptom-free divers; decompression diving needs substantially longer. Confirm dive profile and aircraft altitude with a diving medical professional; minimums do not guarantee safety. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go

Pick your moment.
Not just a month.

Guidance for both islands, which share rainy seasons but not water months. Interests and lodges matter as much as the calendar.

Jan / Mostly dry

Whale-shark season, mostly dry.

January and February often offer a drier interval on both islands and fall within Mafia’s main whale-shark sighting season. Boat outings still depend on weather; keep some unbooked time.

Broad seasonal guidance — not a forecast, availability calendar or migration promise. Picking a month sets it in your plan.
