01Arrive by boat
The airport stays behind on Manda as Lamu’s waterfront draws close.

Coast / Kenya–Tanzania
Two island towns, two dhow horizons, and one route shaped by air, boat and caution.
The journey
Lamu and Stone Town share coral-stone lanes, carved doors and Indian Ocean histories, yet move differently. Lamu’s waterfront narrows into the old town; Zanzibar opens from a denser port into spice country and a long coast.
You reach Lamu by air, cross from Manda airport by boat and stay four nights. A Nairobi night separates the islands before two Stone Town nights and three on the Zanzibar coast.
This journey suits travellers who want time in two living Swahili towns. Lamu carries a serious advisory difference: the US lists the whole county at its highest level; the UK exempts Lamu and Manda islands. If your insurer excludes Lamu, Zanzibar Culture keeps Stone Town and the coast.
Ten nights let each town speak for itself, with the final coast and every transfer shaped on your terms.
Moments along the way
01The airport stays behind on Manda as Lamu’s waterfront draws close.
Donkeys, handcarts and footsteps set the pace inside the old town.
03Late light catches the canvas while the channel changes with the tide.
Sand runs on past the village, wide and quiet at low tide.
Evening food stalls open along the waterfront as balconies fall into shade.
Three final nights leave room for tide-led swimming and an empty calendar.
Where you’ll stay

A route with room to breathe
Nairobi Wilson → Manda airport → Lamu Island → Manda airport → Nairobi Wilson → Zanzibar airport → Stone Town → island coast. Your proposal sets out every flight and boat for your dates.
A sense of the days
The flight usually leaves Wilson in the early afternoon. Light aircraft limit baggage: Safarilink’s limit on this route is 20 kg, in soft bags, which also suit the boat and the lanes. After landing on Manda, a short boat crossing takes you to the island, and the confirmed arrival time decides whether there is light for a first stroll or just time to settle in.
Lamu’s three full days suit a slow pace: lanes in the early cool, a rest through the heat, then the shore or a dhow late in the afternoon. Dress conservatively in town and ask before photographing people. Dhow and boat trips remain within the waters around Lamu and Manda. In April to June the long rains can delay a boat day, so keep one day loose.
Head to Manda by boat in time for the afternoon flight to Wilson, possibly stopping at Malindi on the way. The morning stays free for a last walk. Published times differ, so the confirmed flight decides how long the morning lasts. You spend the night in Nairobi, which gives the Zanzibar flight a travel day of its own.
Fly on to Zanzibar. If you take the afternoon flight, you reach Stone Town in the early evening, so the guided walk waits for the next morning; some weekdays also list an early flight, which gives the old town a longer first day. Dress modestly, as Zanzibar’s authorities can fine people for clothing they consider inappropriate in public.
Leave town for the three nights on the coast. Where the lagoons empty far out at low tide, as they do on the east coast, swimming and reef time follow the tide table and the weather rather than the clock. Take shade through the middle of the day. Your onward flight decides the last morning: an afternoon departure leaves it free, while a morning one means an early transfer.
Typically four nights Lamu, one Nairobi, two Stone Town and three Zanzibar coast: ten nights, with an extra Nairobi night if arrival timings require it.

Good to know
Lamu Old Town and Stone Town are both World Heritage sites, listed in 2001 and 2000: coral stone, carved doors, two different paces. Safarilink’s Lamu flights reach Nairobi after its afternoon Zanzibar flight has gone, hence the Nairobi night; in April and May that flight runs only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The UK’s exception covers only Lamu and Manda islands; Pate, Kiwayu and the county’s mainland stay inside its “against all travel” area. Our rule: boat outings stay in Lamu–Manda waters.
The pairing gives two Swahili island towns enough time to feel distinct, then adds one coast rather than another dense programme. The cost is a Nairobi night between the islands and a Lamu advisory difference you should weigh first.
No. This is a coast-and-culture journey. Marine life may appear on responsibly run boat or reef outings, but nothing is promised and no wildlife encounter justifies ignoring weather, distance rules or the operator’s current guidance.
July to October and January to February are usually the drier shared windows. The long rains fall from late March on Zanzibar and from April on Lamu, where June stays wet. Advice and flights matter more than the month.
Use four in Lamu, one in Nairobi, two in Stone Town and three on a Zanzibar coast. With two Lamu nights you get one full day, which the flights and boat crossings hardly justify. Add coast nights rather than compressing either old town.
This route does not. UK guidance says visitors should fly to Lamu airport and not travel by road. The airport is on Manda Island, and a pre-arranged boat crosses the channel to Lamu town or Shela.
All four Lamu nights and Manda airport sit inside a US Level 4, Do not travel, area; the UK exempts both islands. If you hold a US passport, we raise that warning with you before quoting. Travelling against your government’s advice can affect insurance. Zanzibar Culture leaves Lamu out.
Government advice, checked October 2026: Kenya is US Level 2, issued 28 July 2026, with all Lamu County at Level 4 and no island exception. UK advice, updated 9 October 2026, excludes Lamu and Manda islands from its county warning but specifies air access and particular vigilance. Tanzania is US Level 3, issued 31 October 2025; the UK warning covers the 20 km strip along Tanzania’s border with Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. Read the full advice before travel.
Arriving in Zanzibar from Kenya, you need a yellow fever certificate, because Kenya is on Tanzania’s risk list. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go
Weather is one layer. Government advice, flight days, Ramadan and festival dates, and sea conditions shape the month too.
Aug / Main dry season
July to October is usually the steadier window on both islands, though July can still be showery on Lamu. Clear skies do not change either government’s Lamu advice.
