Zanzibar &
a Short Safari

Price on request

Beach days on Zanzibar, then a short flight to Nyerere’s river for one to three nights.

6–9 nightsIsland & safariZanzibar coast · Nyerere · Stone Town

The journey

Yes, you can go on safari from Zanzibar. A small aircraft leaves early, and about an hour and a quarter later you are in Nyerere.

Beach days come first: warm sea, a reef boat, Stone Town’s lanes. Then comes the bush, one to three nights of river boats, walks with an armed ranger and game drives, before the aircraft takes you back to the island.

Zanzibar & a Short Safari suits travellers whose holiday is the island and who want a brief bush chapter. The trade-offs are an early start, limited luggage and a seasonal airline closure. Choose two or three safari nights for more flexibility; Nyerere & Zanzibar gives the bush more time.

Island days first, a night or two in the bush, and every proportion shaped entirely on your terms.

Moments along the way

Salt water,
then the river.

01

A slow first morning

Coffee on the terrace, a walk on the sand and nothing booked before the afternoon.

02

Snorkelling off Mnemba

Warm water, a guide beside you and the reef a short boat ride away.

03

The early flight

A soft bag, a small aircraft and a drive to the airport in the dark.

04

Afloat on the Rufiji

Channels, sandbanks and palms slide past while your guide cuts the engine to listen.

05

A morning walk

Your ranger stops to explain a print or a bird call; the pace stays slow.

06

Evening in the old town

Carved doors, a market lane and Forodhani Gardens at dusk, then a quiet dinner.

Where you’ll stay

Each stay adds to the story.

From a simple Essential guesthouse on the coast to a Private Collection retreat, each stay is chosen for what it adds. Many Nyerere camps are tented and standards vary widely in the south, so the level you choose matters there.

Good to know

Safari from Zanzibar,
in context.

A safari from Zanzibar is a mainland safari: Nyerere lies about 200 km south-west of the island in a straight line. The park was created in 2019 from the northern Selous Game Reserve, and the Rufiji River braids through it in channels and lakes. In 2026 UNESCO kept the Selous on its danger list; the decision names the Rufiji hydropower dam, the Kidunda dam and a uranium project, and does not mention poaching. One e-visa covers both; inbound insurance is bought once, at your first port of entry.

Government advice, checked October 2026: the US rates Tanzania, Zanzibar included, Level 3, Reconsider travel (31 October 2025). The UK advises against all but essential travel only within 20 km of Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado border, and reports armed crime across Tanzania, including Stone Town and popular Zanzibar beaches. The UK Air Safety List names Tanzania-certified airlines, which are banned from commercial services to, from and within the UK. Read both before travelling.

Malaria risk applies across Tanzania below 1,800 m, so the island and Nyerere are both covered. Travellers arriving from a country on Tanzania’s yellow fever risk list, Kenya among them, need a certificate. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go

Pick your moment.
Not just a month.

A seasonal snapshot for Zanzibar and Nyerere, which keep different calendars. Camp, coast and interests matter as much as the month.

The months that suit both

June to October is when Nyerere’s animals tend to gather near water, and Zanzibar is mostly dry; the south-east kusi wind blows from about June to September.
