Nungwi occupies Zanzibar's northwestern tip, where a modest tidal range keeps the sea close enough for swimming throughout the day. Its working dhow yards, fishing rhythm, accessible reefs and west-facing sunsets create a lively beach base with real village texture.

Unlike Zanzibar's broad tidal lagoons, Nungwi generally keeps swimmable water near the beach from morning onward. Boats leave before dawn, fishermen return with their catch, and craftspeople still shape traditional dhows beside the sand.

The sociable north coast also supports diving, paddling, sunset sailing and excursions toward Mnemba's marine waters. Mnarani's community-run turtle rehabilitation pool adds an educational visit, while Stone Town can be reached for a contrasting historical day.

The drier coast

June to October is dry, sunny and generally calm, with the clearest conditions for reef diving and snorkelling. December to February is also warm and largely dry, making both periods comfortable for north-coast swimming and ocean excursions.

March to May

The long rains

March to May brings the long rains, heavier downpours and rougher seas that may restrict marine activities; November's short rains are usually lighter and intermittent. Nungwi's smaller tidal retreat keeps the beach usable through shoulder periods, subject to daily conditions.

When is the best time to visit Nungwi?

The dry season from June to October gives the clearest skies and the best reef visibility; December to February is warm and largely calm.

Why can you swim all day at Nungwi when other Zanzibar beaches dry out?

The north-west tip sits in a tidal pattern where the sea stays close throughout the day. Much of the east coast sees significant tidal retreat at low tide, leaving wide, exposed sandflats — Nungwi's geography keeps water at the beach across the full tidal cycle.

How far is Nungwi from Zanzibar airport?

Is Nungwi good for snorkelling and diving?
