• June–October — cool dry. The most reliable window: warm, sunny days, gentle humidity and calm water. It lines up neatly with the East African safari season, which makes it the classic bush-and-beach finish after Kenya or Tanzania.
• December–February — hot dry. Peak sun and warm seas, taking in the festive high season. Beautiful beach weather, busiest around the holidays. It pairs well with Tanzania calving or a short dry-season safari, provided festive dates are planned early.
• March–May — long rains. The wettest stretch, often heavy; the island turns lush and very quiet, with the gentlest rates. November brings short rains — passing showers between bright spells. These months can work for travellers who value privacy over guaranteed sun, but they are not the safest choice for a once-in-years beach finish.

Where you stay on the island also matters. Some coasts feel better for swimming, some for long quiet beaches, some for character and spice-island atmosphere. The best time to visit Zanzibar is therefore partly weather, partly tide, partly how you want the island to feel after the safari.
