Zanzibar is warm in every month, so the best time to visit Zanzibar is really a choice between two good dry seasons, plus two shoulder months that suit some travellers well. The sky follows the rains, the beach follows the tide, and the feel of the water follows the wind. Get those three in line with what you want from the island and almost any week from June to February can work.

The two dry seasons are not the same holiday. June to October is the drier, fresher season. Days are warm rather than heavy, nights cooler, and the timing matches the long dry season on the mainland, which is why most safari-and-beach trips land here. The trade is the kusi: a strong south-east wind, best for kitesurfers, which can push seaweed onto east-facing beaches. December to February is hotter and more humid, with lighter wind and often clearer water, and it holds the most expensive weeks of the year over the festive season.
Choose the coast before the month. East-coast beaches drain far out at spring low tide in every month, so if daily swimming matters, pick the coast first. How Zanzibar's tides work explains the pattern.
The rains, and hotel closures. The long rains run from about March to May, with April the wettest, and many beach hotels close for part or all of April and May. November's short rains are lighter than the long rains, though November is still one of the wetter months by total. Long-term averages put November and December rainfall above March's; it usually falls as short, heavy showers rather than all-day rain. Whether a wet-season trip is a good idea is a separate question, answered in our rainy-season guide; here it is enough to say the calendar narrows sharply in April and May.
Ramadan. Zanzibar is largely Muslim, and during Ramadan many cafés in Stone Town usually close in daylight and the town is quieter by day and lively after sunset. By day, eat, drink and smoke discreetly in Stone Town's streets, and dress with shoulders and knees covered. In 2027 Ramadan is expected from about 8 February to 8 or 9 March, and the dates move about 11 days earlier each year. Beach resorts usually carry on as normal; it mostly changes a Stone Town visit, often for the better if you like the evenings.
Pairing the island with a safari. Late June to October lines up the island's dry season with the mainland's, so both halves are in their best weather. A note for late 2026. Tanzania's forecasters expect normal to above-normal short rains this year, intensifying in November and possibly continuing into January 2027, including on Zanzibar. If you plan to travel between November 2026 and January 2027, we plan around the latest forecast when you book.

Is it right for you?
June to October is right for you if you are pairing Zanzibar with a safari, prefer warm rather than hot, or kitesurf. December to February is right for you if you want the hottest, brightest weather and clearer water, and do not mind paying more over the festive weeks. September, October and November suit travellers who want space and are relaxed about showers, which are heavier in November.
Choose something else if you can only travel in April or May and want reliable beach days: no month can promise them, and April is the least likely. If you want the sea close at hand all day, the north-west coast around Nungwi and Kendwa, where the water usually retreats less, is the usual answer within Zanzibar; if a Kenyan coast suits your route better, a Mara-to-coast journey may be the simpler shape.
