Nyerere &
Zanzibar

From the Rufiji River by boat and on foot to Zanzibar’s lagoons, in about a week.

7–8 nightsSafari & seaNyerere (Selous) · Stone Town · Zanzibar coast

The journey

The boat drifts with the engine off. A hippo may surface close enough to hear it breathe, and a fish eagle often calls from a dead palm.

That is Nyerere, the former northern Selous: river, boats and walking safaris, with very few other vehicles. Three or four nights here, then one flight carries you to Stone Town’s coral-stone lanes and a lagoon coast.

Nyerere & Zanzibar suits travellers with seven or eight nights who want water and walking more than migration plains; families can do it well, with short flights and boat days. The trade-offs are heat, biting tsetse flies and a south that shuts for the rains.

River first, island close behind: two flights, one week, and every night shaped entirely on your terms.

Moments along the way

Two kinds
of water.

Hippo yawning wide in muddy shallows
01

Drifting the Rufiji

Hippo pods and crocodiles on the sandbanks, and elephants that often come down to drink.

02

On foot with a ranger

Read tracks at walking pace with an armed ranger, the bush suddenly louder and closer.

03

Looking for wild dogs

Early drives along the lakes, your guide reading fresh tracks for a pack on the move.

04

Sundowner on the sand

Where your camp arranges one, a drink on a sandbar as the river turns copper.

05

Stone Town at dusk

Narrow lanes, carved doors and the call to prayer drifting over the rooftops.

06

Swimming by the tide

At spring lows the east-coast lagoon pulls back hundreds of metres, so tides plan the day.

Where you’ll stay

Each stay adds to the story.

From a simple Essential camp on the Rufiji to a Private Collection retreat on the coast, each stay is chosen for what it adds. Camp standards in the south vary widely, so the level you choose matters.

Good to know

Nyerere and Zanzibar,
in context.

Nyerere National Park was created in 2019 from the northern Selous Game Reserve and covers about 30,900 km². The Rufiji River braids through it into channels and lakes, so boat safaris are central here. UNESCO kept the Selous on its danger list in 2026; its decision names the Rufiji hydropower dam, another dam and a uranium mine. Ask any camp how it reports its conservation and staffing work. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania: one e-visa covers both, and compulsory inbound insurance is bought once, at your first port of entry, even with your own policy.

Government advice, checked October 2026: the US rates Tanzania, Zanzibar included, Level 3, Reconsider travel (issued 31 October 2025). The UK warns against all but essential travel only within 20 km of the border with Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, and notes armed crime across Tanzania, Stone Town included. Neither names Nyerere as a warned area; read both before you travel. The UK Air Safety List names Tanzania-certified airlines, which are banned from commercial services to, from and within the UK.

Malaria risk covers all of Tanzania below 1,800 m, Nyerere and Zanzibar included. Tanzania asks for a yellow fever certificate from travellers arriving from a country on its risk list, Kenya among them. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

Not just a month.

A seasonal snapshot for southern Tanzania and Zanzibar. Your camps and interests matter as much as the calendar.

Jul / Main dry season

Water, walking and a dry coast.

Nyerere’s usual window for game, with wildlife gathering by the water and good conditions for walking. Lakes and rivers are full in June and early July, and Zanzibar is dry too.

Broad seasonal guidance — not a forecast, availability calendar or migration promise. Picking a month sets it in your plan.
