The most common disappointment on Zanzibar has nothing to do with the hotel. It is walking down to the beach at eleven in the morning and finding the sea a long walk away, across a flat of wet sand and seagrass, for several hours. The Zanzibar beaches swimmable at low tide are few and sit together on one corner of the island. The caveats are real, and the alternatives are better than they sound.
The detail
The short list: Kendwa, then Nungwi's west side. The island narrows to a point at its northern tip, and the beaches on the western face of that point — Kendwa and the west-facing run of Nungwi — have no broad reef flat in front of them. The same four-metre tide that empties a lagoon on the east coast moves the waterline here by tens of metres — about 25 on Nungwi's west side — and Kendwa's beach is swimmable through the day on an ordinary tide. Nungwi's northern and eastern faces, by contrast, recede up to about 500 metres; how the two villages compare beyond the tide is in Nungwi or Kendwa?.
The honest caveat. Swimming at any state of the tide is a tendency, not a guarantee. At the biggest spring lows — new and full moon — even Kendwa means a longer wade to swimming depth, and a strong July kusi can make any beach lively. The north-west gives the best odds on the island, not a guarantee.
What does not hold water, however it is sold. Matemwe, Pwani Mchangani, Kiwengwa, Pongwe, Uroa, Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu and Michamvi all sit behind the reef, and all drain at low tide — some to a few hundred metres, Paje and Jambiani to around a kilometre, Chwaka Bay to nearly two. Pongwe's small cove holds a little more water than its neighbours, but none of these offers low-tide swimming in the sense this page means. Any listing that claims otherwise for an east-coast beach is describing high tide. Stone Town has no swimming beach. Mnemba Island is a single private lodge rather than a choice of beaches, so its water is a question for the lodge, not a rule this page can give you.
Hotels on the north-west tip. Kendwa has eight properties in the stays data and Nungwi eighteen. The stays data records location, tier and family policy, not tide behaviour, so check which face of the point a Nungwi hotel fronts before you book. The ordered lists are in best hotels in Kendwa and best hotels in Nungwi.
The alternative: a pool and the right coast. If what you really want is a quiet beach, a reef and a lodge with character, the east coast is the answer and the tide is the price — 87 of the 95 beach and coast properties in the Zanzibar stays data list a pool, so on the east coast, read that line first. A good pool turns low tide from a problem into the hours you spend reading, walking the flats or going into town. Matemwe, Michamvi and Bwejuu have several small hotels with pools in the stays data.
Reading your week before you choose. If you walk the flats at low tide, wear reef shoes, step around live coral and seagrass, and keep to the edges of the seaweed plots, which are someone's harvest. Pull up a tide table for your dates. In a neap week, around the quarter moons, the east coast's lows tend to be milder; a spring week makes them dramatic and the north-west more valuable. The mechanics are in Zanzibar tides explained.
Key facts
| Coast / beach | Low-tide swimming | Why | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kendwa; west-facing Nungwi | Yes, through most of the tide on most days | Deeper water close to shore; no broad reef flat | A tide table for spring lows (new/full moon) |
| Northern and eastern Nungwi | No — recedes up to about 500 m | Sits on a flat that exposes at low water | Which face of the point the hotel fronts |
| East and south-east coast (Matemwe to Michamvi) | No — drains hundreds of metres, about 1 km at Paje and Jambiani | Reef lagoon that empties at low tide | Short windows around high tide, about 50 minutes later each day; whether the hotel has a pool |
| Stone Town | No swimming beach | Town waterfront | Plan beach time on a coast |
Planning it with Nobu
A travel designer does not sell "swim at any tide", because no one can make the moon keep a promise. The conversation is simpler: how much the sea at eleven in the morning matters to you, and the tide table for your dates. From there, a travel designer can place you on the north-west tip or find an east-coast lodge whose pool and beach suit the hours the sea is out. The one-coast island stay, Shores of Zanzibar, starts with that conversation.
Is it right for you?
The north-west is right for you if you want to be in the sea whenever you feel like it, if you have young children who will not wait for the tide, or if your stay is a short one. It is less right if you want a long, empty beach and a small lodge with nobody else on the sand, in which case the east coast with a pool, and a tide table, will make you happier.
