Islands / Zanzibar
Stone Town, then one coast chosen by the tide, for short stays or after a safari.
The journey
Four to six nights is enough for Zanzibar, if you choose one coast and keep to it.
Start in Stone Town, where one night gives you the lanes at dusk and two add a spice farm. Then cross the island to a single coast, picked for how it handles the tide, and stay long enough to learn its rhythm.
Shores of Zanzibar is our Zanzibar 5 day itinerary, for a week or less on the island, on its own or after a safari. The trade is one coast, not two: you come to know one beach rather than skim several. With ten nights, choose Zanzibar Ten Nights.
One old town, one coast and the days between, kept simple and shaped on your terms.
Moments along the way
Evening on a Stone Town roof, the call to prayer drifting over coral-stone walls.
Two or three hours on foot past the Old Fort, Forodhani Gardens, markets and carved doors.
At high water the lagoon fills, and the swim you waited for finally begins.
At low tide the east-coast sea pulls back towards the reef, and you walk.
Fish, coconut and cardamom at a plain table, lanterns lit and the tide far out.
No boat, no guide, no alarm: just the sea, a book and a late swim.
Where you’ll stay
Stays run from a simple Essential house in Stone Town to a Private Collection retreat on the coast. You need only one of the two coasts below. With a single move, put the comfort where you spend three or four nights: by the sea.

Add to your journey

A route with room to breathe
Zanzibar airport → Stone Town → one coast → airport. One hotel move and two cross-island drives, the longest to the north-west. Your proposal confirms the coast.
A sense of the days
Land, drop your bags in Stone Town and walk slowly by the sea at dusk. Cover shoulders and knees in the old town.
Walk with a guide in the cool of the morning, then add a spice farm if you have a second night.
Northbound, a spice farm fits on the drive. On the south-east road, Jozani Forest’s red colobus add a 60 to 75 minute walk; fees apply.
Swim at high water. At low water walk the flats or take a boat, and ask before photographing seaweed farmers.
Leave the coast in good time for the road, then fly home or on. For an early flight, end in Stone Town instead.
Typically one or two nights in Stone Town and three or four on one coast: four to six in all, with one hotel move.

Good to know
Unguja, the island usually meant by Zanzibar, lies off Tanzania’s coast, with Stone Town on its west side, a World Heritage Site since 2000. The north-west beaches hold water at almost every tide, while the east-coast lagoon drains for hundreds of metres at spring lows. Each coast is roughly 45 to 65 km from Stone Town by road. One e-visa covers the island and the mainland, and Tanzania’s government inbound insurance is compulsory, even with your own policy.
Each extra coast adds a hotel move and a cross-island drive, and a short trip cannot spare that time. On one coast you learn when the water comes in and plan swims, boats and walks around it.
Zanzibar red colobus monkeys live in Jozani Forest, where a guided walk takes about an hour and fees apply at the gate; keep your distance. What you see on a reef depends on the day, tide and water, so nothing is promised; never stand on coral.
June to September and December to February are mostly dry. If your dates allow, avoid late March to May. In the short rains, plan a boat day early in your stay so a wet morning can move it.
Five days on the ground means four nights: one in Stone Town and three on the coast. Five or six nights add a second town night and a boat day. Our how-many-days guide compares longer stays.
Yes. Light aircraft link the Serengeti and Arusha to Zanzibar, and Kenya Airways flies from Nairobi. Bush airlines allow 15 kg (Coastal) or 20 kg (Auric), soft bags advised. Where you first land in Tanzania decides which inbound insurance you buy.
Not if you accept one coast: four to six nights is unhurried for that. It is too short if you want a second coast, serious diving or Pemba; choose Zanzibar Ten Nights or Zanzibar & Pemba instead.
Government advice, checked October 2026: the US rates all of Tanzania, Zanzibar included, Level 3, Reconsider travel (issued 31 October 2025). The UK advises against all but essential travel only within 20 km of the border with Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, and warns of armed crime across Tanzania, with incidents reported in Stone Town, at hotels and on popular Zanzibar beaches (page updated 9 October 2026). The UK Air Safety List names Tanzania-certified airlines, which are banned from commercial services to, from and within the UK. Read both before you travel.
Malaria risk applies across Tanzania below 1,800 m, Zanzibar included. If you arrive from Kenya, for example after a Mara safari, Tanzania asks for a yellow fever certificate, because Kenya is on its risk list. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go
A seasonal snapshot for Zanzibar. On a short stay you have little room to wait out weather, so the month matters more than usual.
Aug / Main dry season
June to September is mostly dry, with the south-east kusi wind for kitesurfing at Paje. Tides still decide east-coast swims and reef trips in any month, so read the table first.
