Zanzibar hotels with a swimmable beach cluster on one stretch of coast. On the east side of the island the lagoon drains at low tide and the sea retreats across sand and seagrass; The Z Hotel's own FAQ puts the walk to the water there at 200–300 m. Hotel marketing presents the north-west faces of Kendwa and Nungwi as different. Zuri describes Kendwa as "unaffected by strong tidal variations", and Sandies Baobab says its beach is "unaffected by the changing tides".
That contrast is why every hotel below sits on the north-west. Picture the east coast at dead low water, the lagoon drained to sand and seagrass, and then the north-west beach, where the hotels say the sea stays put. The five properties come from Nobu's stays dataset and are ordered by fit for purpose, not price: how strong the hotel's own swimming claim is, how simple the entry sounds, and how well the rest of the stay holds up.
How to choose
Frontage, not address. "Nungwi" covers both the north-west beach and the northern tip, and the two behave differently. Look for a hotel that names its shore, as each one below does. The coastal pattern itself is explained in Zanzibar tides explained and the low-tide beach guide.
The entry itself. Look for the swimming point, not the reception pin: sand straight into the sea, steps down a coral ledge, or a gate onto a shared public beach. Then find out which room category is closest to it. A garden bungalow on a beachfront property can still sit a fair walk from the water.
The list
| Hotel | Coast | Tier | Setting | The hotel's own swimming claim | Suits | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zuri Zanzibar | Kendwa, north-west | Elevated | Resort in tropical gardens | "A swimmable beach at any tide" | Couples and families wanting greenery | Garden rooms are set back from the sand |
| Gold Zanzibar Beach House & Spa | Kendwa, north-west | Private Collection | Resort with a wide pool | "Tideless white sand Kendwa beach" | A beach-and-pool resort stay | The most expensive tier on this list |
| Sandies Baobab Beach Zanzibar | Nungwi, north-west coast | Signature | Larger resort | Beach "unaffected by the changing tides" | Families wanting a resort format | Larger scale, less intimate |
| The Z Hotel | Nungwi (some listings say Kendwa Beach) | Elevated | Boutique hotel | Swim "whether the tide is in or out" | Couples; guests aged 16 and over | Closed April and May |
| Kendwa Rocks Hotel | Kendwa, north-west | Essential | Social beach hotel | "Tides that make swimming possible all year round" | Swimmers who like a lively scene | Full Moon Party venue |
Verdict, in order: Zuri for the clearest stated claim with gardens; Gold for a resort built around beach and pool; Sandies Baobab for families on the north-west coast; The Z Hotel for couples; Kendwa Rocks if you want company.
North-west coast — Kendwa
Zuri Zanzibar
Elevated · beachfront, Kendwa · best for garden surroundings with sea time
Zuri's FAQ says the resort offers "a swimmable beach at any tide", and its Kendwa beach page describes soft white sand, palms and coral rock framing the shore. Bungalows sit in expansive tropical gardens, so beach access does not always mean a sea view from bed. The one thing to find out is which room category puts you nearest the water.
Right for you if you want landscaped grounds, families welcome and the clearest swimming claim on this list. Not for you if you want to step from your terrace straight onto the sand.
Gold Zanzibar Beach House & Spa
Private Collection · beachfront, Kendwa · best for a resort centred on beach and pool
Gold's own website describes a "tideless white sand Kendwa beach", a wide pool and snacks served directly on the sand, with an à la carte restaurant facing the sunset. It is the most polished resort format here, with space to spread out between pool and shore. Read "tideless" as the hotel's marketing word: Kendwa still has tides, they simply matter less on this coast.
Right for you if you want a high-end resort where swimming, pool time and beach dining sit side by side. Not for you if you prefer a small, informal place.
Kendwa Rocks Hotel
Essential · beachfront, Kendwa · best for swimmers who also want a social setting
The location page puts the hotel "only a few steps" from the water and describes "tides that make swimming possible all year round". Its Full Moon Party page is just as direct about the other half of the stay: fire shows, DJs and dancing until sunrise for thousands of guests. The party runs around the full moon, so check the dates.
Right for you if you want an affordable beachfront base and enjoy a lively scene. Not for you if you want quiet evenings or early nights.
North-west coast — Nungwi
Sandies Baobab Beach Zanzibar
Signature · beachfront, Nungwi · best for a resort stay on a documented north-west frontage
Sandies' directions page places the resort on the north-west coast near Nungwi and says guests can swim "at any time" because the beach is unaffected by the tides. That named frontage matters more than the village address. It is a larger resort with pool, spa and diving alongside the beach, and families are welcome.
Right for you if you want a resort with plenty to do and a stated any-time swim. Not for you if you want the intimacy of a small hotel.
The Z Hotel
Elevated · beachfront, Nungwi · best for couples seeking a boutique format
The FAQ says you can swim "whether the tide is in or out", sets its north-west position against the 200–300 m low-tide walk on the east coast, and says its rooms and pool are not equipped for children under 16. Some travel listings place it on Kendwa Beach; Nobu's dataset records Nungwi. The hotel closes in April and May, so plan around that.
Right for you if you are a couple or a party of guests aged 16 and over who want a boutique hotel rather than a resort. Not for you if you are travelling with children under 16, unless the hotel agrees an exception in low or medium season, or you are travelling in April or May.
If none of these fit
Do not force a beach-first choice if you would prefer a quieter coast, a particular room layout or a lower-key village. The hotel overview by purpose offers other starting points, and Nungwi or Kendwa compares the two villages as places to stay. A pool you love plus swims timed to high water can make an east-coast hotel the better fit. A small cottage alternative is Flame Tree Cottages in Nungwi: its official website describes cottages among the palms, a garden pool and a gate through which guests walk to the beach, but it publishes nothing about low water, so ask the hotel how the entry works at low tide before you choose it. For families and couples, family hotels and honeymoon and adults-only stays start from the party, not the tide.
Nungwi is still a working fishing village; Flame Tree says most of its staff come from it. Dhows and fishing boats anchor and land off this beach, so swim well clear of moored boats and their lines, and ask before photographing fishermen at work.
Planning it with Nobu
A story-led journey starts with how you want to spend the day: a swim before breakfast, a book by the pool, an evening in the village. Bring that rhythm to a planning conversation alongside your dates and room preferences, and the beach chapter is shaped around it. Which of these hotels Nobu currently offers is confirmed when a proposal is prepared.
