From Stone Town’s old lanes to Pemba’s quiet creeks, two islands at two different speeds.

The journey

Zanzibar is the island most people know. Pemba, half an hour north by air, has far fewer places to stay.

Start in Stone Town among carved doors and spice markets, then settle on a reef coast of Unguja, Zanzibar’s main island. Fly north to green hills, mangrove creeks and evenings that are often quiet, with frogs and the tide for company.

Zanzibar & Pemba suits travellers who want culture first and quiet after, and who are happy with one small-plane hop and up to about 90 minutes by road beyond it. It is not a dive trip, though certified divers can add dives.

Two islands, eight to ten nights, and every transfer, boat day and idle hour shaped on your terms.

Moments along the way

Stone lanes,
then quiet water.

01

Rooftop dusk, Stone Town

The call to prayer rolling across tin roofs and minarets as the lanes cool.

02

Mnemba at first light

Masks on over the coral off the north-east coast, while the light is still low.

03

The hop north

A small plane over the Pemba Channel, the water shifting from turquoise to deep blue.

04

Seaweed at low tide

Farmers tend seaweed lines on Pemba’s tidal flats; ask before photographing anyone.

Sea turtle swimming just under the surface over a pale coral seabed
05

Misali’s snorkel beach

A boat out to the island, then a beach sloping straight into the water.

06

Clove country

In season, cloves dry on mats beside the road and the smell reaches you first.

Where you’ll stay

Each stay adds to the story.

Unguja stays run from a simple Essential house in Stone Town to a Private Collection retreat on the coast. Pemba’s lodges range from Expedition to Elevated, and family policies differ, so tell us who is travelling.

Good to know

The two islands,
in context.

Pemba is the second large island of the Zanzibar archipelago, north of Unguja across the Pemba Channel: about 125 km airport to airport, half an hour by air. It is greener and hillier, its coast cut by mangrove creeks. Misali Island lies off the west coast, inside the Pemba Channel Conservation Area, where non-East African adults pay US$10 a day and children aged 5 to 15 US$5, at September 2025 rates; confirm the Misali charge when you book.

Government advice, checked October 2026: the US rates Tanzania, the islands included, Level 3, Reconsider travel (31 October 2025). The UK advises against all but essential travel only within 20 km of Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado border, and reports armed crime across Tanzania, including Stone Town, hotels and popular Zanzibar beaches. The UK Air Safety List names Tanzania-certified airlines, which are banned from commercial services to, from and within the UK. Read both before travelling.

Malaria risk covers all of Tanzania below 1,800 m, Zanzibar and Pemba included. Tanzania requires a yellow fever certificate from travellers arriving from a country on its risk list, Kenya among them. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go

Pick your moment.
Not just a month.

A seasonal snapshot for Zanzibar and Pemba. Your stays and interests matter as much as the calendar.

Typically drierLonger rainsMore variable

Jul / Main dry season

Dry days and open water.

June to October is mostly dry on both islands, and the east-coast tide table still sets reef trips. Operators disagree on Pemba’s clearest months, so your proposal asks each lodge for its own dates.

Broad seasonal guidance — not a forecast, availability calendar or migration promise. Picking a month sets it in your plan.
