Northern Frontier Expedition
The Northern Frontier Expedition is a self-drive journey through northern Kenya designed by Nobu — independent exploration in a 4x4, supported by route planning, local backup and 24-hour assistance.
Narrative introduction
Somewhere past the last signpost, the road stops belonging to anyone but you. The tarmac gives way to track, the towns thin out, and northern Kenya opens up — raw, vast and gloriously empty. This is the Africa that doesn't come on a guided coach. This is the Africa you drive into yourself.
The Northern Frontier Expedition hands you a capable 4x4, a route designed around what you want to find, and the freedom to take it at your own pace. Stop where the light is good. Linger where you like. Change your mind. The journey is yours.
And because freedom is only freedom when it's safe, our people are with you the whole way — a planned route, vetted stops, and a voice one call away whenever you need it. This is self-drive with a safety net.
Experience moments
- The open frontier — Drive country most travellers only fly over, with the horizon entirely your own.
- Camp where the light does the talking — Pull in at vetted camps and wild-feeling stops we've chosen for you.
- Meet the people of the north — Samburu and Turkana country, on terms of respect, not spectacle.
- Find your own pace — No coach timetable, no group of strangers. Just the road and the day ahead.
- Arrive somewhere earned — End the route at a place that feels like a reward, because it is.
How it works
We handle the parts that shouldn't be an adventure: a well-prepared 4x4, a route planned to your appetite for remoteness, accommodation booked ahead, border and permit logistics where needed, and 24-hour assistance the entire way. You handle the wheel and the wonder.
Make it yours
Go further north, or keep it gentle. Add a guided day where local knowledge unlocks more. Travel as a couple, a family or a small convoy of friends. Extend across borders into the wider East Africa Overland route. Tell us how independent you want to feel, and we'll design to it.
The rhythm of the journey
- Briefing & handover — Collect your prepared 4x4 in Nairobi (or by arrangement), full route briefing, comms check, and you're away.
- Into the frontier — Drive north over a few unhurried days — Samburu, Laikipia, the lands toward Turkana — stopping at vetted camps we've booked ahead.
- The far north — Reach the wild edges at your own pace; optional guided days where local knowledge unlocks more.
- The return, or the crossing — Loop back south, or continue into the wider East Africa Overland route.
Routes typically run 6–12 days. We design the distance and remoteness to your appetite.

What it costs
The Northern Frontier Expedition is designed bespoke. Your quote is built from live rates, season, group size, routing, guiding, permits and accommodation tier. We'll give you a clear, all-in quote.
Northern Kenya, in context
Northern Kenya — Samburu, Laikipia and the lands toward Lake Turkana — is among East Africa's most dramatic and least-travelled regions: arid frontier landscapes, distinctive wildlife (Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich) and rich pastoralist cultures. Self-drive here rewards the independent traveller, and Nobu's local support makes it accessible without losing the sense of genuine expedition.
