On Foot & in the Saddle

On Foot & in the Saddle is a tailored active-safari journey through Kenya's Maasai Mara and Laikipia conservancies, designed by Nobu around the individual traveller. Built around walking safaris with armed guides and horseback rides among plains game, away from the vehicle and the crowds, available across comfort levels from Essential to Private Collection.

Narrative introduction

A safari vehicle is a wonderful thing — but it is also a wall. Step down from it, and everything changes. The wild stops being a view through glass and becomes something you are in: the crunch of grass underfoot, the smell of wild sage, the way a giraffe lifts its head to read you. On foot and in the saddle, the animals see you as one of them, and the plains close around you. This is the oldest way to move through Africa, and still the most alive.

On Foot & in the Saddle is built for travellers who want to feel the country, not just photograph it. In the private conservancies of Laikipia, you can ride for hours among zebra and giraffe, the herds parting and re-forming around you as though you belong. In the Mara's quieter corners and conservancies, you can walk at dawn with a Maasai guide and an armed ranger, reading tracks, learning the small signs, understanding the bush from the ground up. No engines. No crowds. Just the wild and the pace of your own steps.

This is safari stripped back to the thing itself — Africa met directly, with your feet on its earth.

Experience moments

  • Riding among the herds — Canter across open plains as zebra and giraffe move with you, not away.
  • Walking at first light — Set out on foot with a Maasai guide and tracker, reading the night's stories in the dust.
  • The small wild — Discover what the vehicle misses — tracks, dung beetles, birdsong, the scent of wild herbs.
  • Eye-level encounters — Watch plains game accept you on their terms, close and unhurried.
  • A ride to breakfast — Pull up where the view earns it; let the morning stretch over coffee in the open.
  • Firelight after effort — End each day pleasantly tired, where the fire and the stars take over.

How you'll travel

This journey lives on private land — the conservancies and riding country where walking and horses are allowed and the wildlife is used to people on foot. From an Essential riding camp with horses at the picket line to a Private Collection house with your own guide, mounts and miles of wilderness, each stay is chosen for the access it gives. Here, where you stay decides what you can do — so we place you where the walking and riding are best, at the level that suits you.

Make it yours

Ride as hard or as gently as you like — these journeys suit confident riders and complete beginners, on the right horses. Prefer your feet? Build the whole journey around walking, with vehicle game drives only when you want them. Add a fly-camp night out under canvas, a camel-supported walk, or a night drive. Pair the active days with classic game viewing in the Mara, or with Laikipia's rhino conservancies next door.

The rhythm of the journey

  • Arrive and find your feet — Fly into Laikipia or the Mara by light aircraft. Settle in; a gentle first walk or ride to read the land and match you to the right pace.
  • Into the saddle — Full days riding the conservancy plains among plains game, with breaks where the view deserves them. Distances shaped to your confidence.
  • On foot at dawn — Walking safaris with a guide and armed ranger — tracking, learning the bush, meeting the wild at ground level.
  • Deeper, or wider — A fly-camp night, a longer ride, or classic game drives to round out the country — shaped to what moves you.
  • A last morning — One more walk or ride before you fly out, or continue your wider Kenya journey.

Most travellers spend 4–6 nights on an active journey. We'll shape the pace, the riding and the walking entirely around you.

Active safari, in context

Walking and horseback safaris in Kenya are concentrated on private land — chiefly the Laikipia conservancies and the Mara's private conservancies — where leaving the vehicle is permitted and the wildlife is habituated to people on foot. Walking safaris are led by qualified guides accompanied by an armed ranger, and read the bush at close range; horseback safaris let confident and novice riders move among plains game such as zebra, giraffe, eland and gazelle, which accept horses far more readily than people on foot. Riding country is found across Laikipia and parts of the greater Mara; the drier months (roughly June to October and January to February) make for the best footing and the easiest tracking. Nobu designs active journeys — typically four to six nights — for travellers who want the wild at ground level, matched to their fitness and riding ability.

Do I need to be an experienced rider for a horseback safari?
Not necessarily. Riding country and camps cater to a range, from beginners on calm, well-schooled horses to experienced riders wanting fast plains gallops. We match the camp, the horse and the distances to your ability.
Are walking safaris safe?
Walking safaris are led by qualified, experienced guides accompanied by an armed ranger, on routes chosen for safety. You're briefed beforehand and move at a calm, deliberate pace. The risk is managed carefully — and the reward is the wild met directly.
Where in Kenya can you do walking and riding safaris?
Mostly on private land — the Laikipia conservancies and the Mara's private conservancies — where it's permitted and the wildlife is used to people on foot and on horseback. We build the journey around those areas.
Can you combine active days with normal game drives?
Yes. Most travellers blend walking and riding with classic vehicle safaris, so you get the close, active encounters and the broader game viewing. We balance it to your energy.
