Why visit

Nairobi is the threshold to Kenya. Almost every journey into the Mara, Amboseli or the north passes through here, and the city has grown into the role with grace — green, high and surprisingly wild at the edges, with good food, real culture and a creative energy all its own. It is a city you pass through, yes, but one worth pausing in.

What makes Nairobi unusual is how close the wild stays. A national park where lions and rhino roam sits within sight of the skyline, orphaned elephants are raised on the city's fringe, and giraffes lean over garden walls in the leafy suburb of Karen. Few capitals let you meet Africa's wildlife before you have even left town.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre offer close, conservation-led encounters, and the Karen Blixen Museum, set in the Out of Africa farmhouse, gives the city its literary heart. Beyond these, Nairobi rewards with markets, museums, a lively restaurant and arts scene, and easy connections onward. It is the natural place to ease into — or unwind from — a safari.

Best time to visit

Nairobi sits at altitude and stays mild year-round, cooler and fresher than the coast, with warm days and cool evenings. Its dry spells (roughly January–February and June–September) align with prime safari season, when most journeys pass through. The long rains (April–May) and short rains (November) bring afternoon showers but rarely disrupt a city stay. As a gateway, Nairobi works in any season. Getting there

Nairobi is served by two airports: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), the main international gateway, and Wilson Airport, the hub for light-aircraft flights to the Mara, Amboseli, the north and the coast. Most journeys arrive international at JKIA and depart on safari from Wilson — we handle the connection, including the transfer between the two. The city is also the start of road routes into the Rift Valley and beyond.

How it fits into a journey

Nairobi works best when it is designed with intention. For some travellers it is only a soft landing: a garden hotel, a good dinner and a clean transfer to Wilson the next morning. For others it is a full first chapter, with Nairobi National Park at dawn, the elephant orphanage, the Giraffe Centre and time in Karen or the city's restaurant scene before the safari begins.

The key is flight rhythm. International arrivals, Wilson departures and road routes to the Rift all need enough space to feel calm, especially after a long-haul flight. We often use Nairobi at both ends of a Kenya journey: one night to arrive well, and a final night to buffer the homeward flight or add a last city experience. Done well, it keeps the whole safari from feeling rushed.
