Nairobi is Kenya's capital, principal international gateway and the starting point for most safari routes. Its cool highland setting combines museums, restaurants and creative culture with remarkable wildlife experiences, including a national park directly beside the city skyline.

A considered day can link Nairobi National Park with conservation-led elephant and giraffe visits, then continue into Karen's literary history or the city's food and arts scene. Few capitals place genuine wildlife so close to urban life.

The city also connects efficiently by air to Kenya's major reserves and coast, making one or two nights useful rather than incidental. A well-paced stay can soften arrival, recover lost time or provide a meaningful final day.

January to February and June to September are Nairobi's drier periods, aligning naturally with many safari itineraries. Cooler mornings favour early wildlife drives, while generally clearer conditions make city touring and onward road connections more comfortable.

April–May

The greener months

April to May brings the long rains, and November typically carries shorter showers. Rain may shape outdoor timing but rarely removes the value of a city stay, since museums, dining, conservation visits and flight connections remain available.

Is Nairobi worth visiting, or just a gateway?

Both. Most travellers pass through on the way to safari, but a day or two unlocks a national park on the city's edge, elephant and giraffe sanctuaries and a genuine city scene — a rewarding frame for a safari.

Can you see wildlife in Nairobi?

Yes — Nairobi National Park holds lion, rhino, giraffe and plains game within minutes of the city, and the Sheldrick elephant orphanage and Giraffe Centre offer close encounters nearby.

What's the difference between JKIA and Wilson Airport?

JKIA is the main international airport; Wilson is the domestic hub for light-aircraft safari flights. International arrivals usually transfer from JKIA to Wilson to fly on safari.

How long should you spend in Nairobi?

A night or two at the start or end of a safari is plenty to cover the park, the sanctuaries and a little of the city without slowing the wider journey.
