Nyungwe National Park

Why visit

Nyungwe is one of Africa's great surviving rainforests — a deep, ancient green that has cloaked these mountains for thousands of years, long enough to shelter an astonishing density of life. To walk its trails is to enter a different register of safari: not the open plains, but a close, layered world of birdsong, dripping ferns and the sudden crash of monkeys overhead.

The headline experiences are its primates. Habituated chimpanzees are tracked through the forest at dawn, and great, noisy super-troops of colobus monkeys — sometimes hundreds strong — move through the canopy in a spectacle found almost nowhere else. Overhead runs Nyungwe's famous canopy walkway, a suspension bridge strung high between the trees, where you stand level with the forest's top storey and the valley falls away beneath your feet.

It is also the quietest, least-trodden corner of Rwanda's wild — a forest for walkers, birders and anyone who wants their wildness layered and intimate rather than wide open. As a forest counterpoint to the gorillas of the north and the savannah of the east, it completes the Rwandan picture.

Wildlife & landscapes

Nyungwe is primate country: habituated chimpanzees, huge troops of Angola colobus monkeys, and a long list of other species — L'Hoest's, grey-cheeked mangabey, blue and mona monkeys among them — make this one of the richest primate forests in the region. The forest is also a birding stronghold, with many Albertine Rift endemics drawing enthusiasts from across the world, and orchids, butterflies and ancient hardwoods for those who look closer.

The landscape is montane rainforest at its most dramatic — steep, folded mountains under a near-continuous canopy, threaded with waterfalls and clear streams, and high enough to stay cool and often misted. A watershed within the park feeds both the Congo and Nile basins, a quiet reminder of the forest's reach.

Best time to visit Nyungwe National Park

Chimpanzee trekking and forest walks run year-round, with the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) easiest underfoot — firmer trails and clearer skies for the canopy walk. The chimps can range more widely and the going can be tougher in the dry months, while the wetter months (March–May and October–November) bring the forest to its lushest and the birding to its best, at the cost of muddier trails. Know before you go

• Getting there: Nyungwe lies in Rwanda's south-west, roughly a four-to-six-hour scenic drive from Kigali (often broken with a night at Lake Kivu), or reached by a light-aircraft hop to a nearby airstrip where available.
• Permits & fees: Chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walk and other activities each require a permit or fee, set by the park authority; we confirm current rates and arrange them with you.
• How long: 2–3 nights lets you trek the chimps, walk the canopy and explore a forest trail without rushing.
• Fitness: Chimp trekking involves steep, often slippery forest hill walking; the canopy walk is gentler. We match the activity to your fitness.
