The journey

Kigali gives the journey a measured beginning: a city night, time with its history and a clear morning for the road north through steeply cultivated hills.

Below the Virunga volcanoes, the scale changes. You meet rangers at Kinigi, receive a family assignment and walk into forest that may be wet and steep. If trackers make contact, the visit lasts up to one hour before you return along the changing trail.

Rwanda Gorillas is for travellers who want a short, single-country forest journey and can accept the permit cost, physical effort and current border advice. Add Nyungwe or Akagera only when extra nights improve the route rather than turning it into a hurried circuit.

A compact journey, with one defining forest morning and enough room around it to breathe.

If contact is made, lower voices, keep seven metres back and watch.

Where you’ll stay

Each stay adds to the story.

Choose an Essential city room and forest lodge or move towards a Private Collection retreat with volcano views. The important detail is location: the briefing is at 07:00, so forest nights sit near Kinigi or in Musanze.

Your planner confirms each stay for your dates.

Good to know

Rwanda’s gorilla route,
in context.

A Rwanda gorilla safari itinerary starts in Kigali and runs north through Musanze to a forest base near Kinigi. Nobu books the gorilla permit separately: the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) lists US$1,500 for a foreign adult, a minimum age of 15 and at most eight visitors per group. From November to May, two nights at Akagera or Nyungwe can take 30% off the permit. Rangers assign each group a gorilla family at the briefing, so a short approach cannot be promised. The hour with the gorillas starts at contact; keep time for the walk back.

Government advice, checked October 2026. The US rates Rwanda Level 3, Reconsider Travel (4 June 2026), for crime, unrest and health risks, and its summary says not to travel within 10 km of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The UK advises against all but essential travel only to parts of Rusizi District, in the south-west (updated 4 September 2026). It records artillery fire from the DRC hitting Kinigi sector, near the border, in 2022, and a fatal 2023 bus attack on the road through Nyungwe Forest. Read both full advisories before you decide.

Gorilla trekking can involve steep, muddy ground at altitude for several hours. Park access may be refused if you have a cold, flu or another infectious illness. Malaria and vaccination advice depends on your medical history. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go

Pick your moment.
Not just a month.

Trekking runs throughout the year. This calendar describes likely trail character, while rain, cloud and family locations still change day by day.

Jul / Long dry spell

Firmer walking, greater demand.

June to August is usually Rwanda’s main drier period. Trails may be firmer and permits are in higher demand, so settle dates early; rain still falls some days.
