Days begin at dawn, when birds are active. You travel slowly by vehicle, boat or forest trail. A local guide leads: your driver-guide on drives, a boat crew on Kenya's lakes, a Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) ranger-guide on bird walks in Bwindi or Murchison, a community boatman at Mabamba.
Kenya's flamingos have largely left Nakuru, Bogoria and Elementaita. Kenya Wildlife Service counts: about 500 at Nakuru in January 2025, over 1.3 million in 2006.

How long, how fit, who for
A morning or an afternoon, mostly easy; forest slopes ask more of the legs. It suits first-timers to keen listers who like dawn starts, not anyone who wants to cover ground. Parks and lodges set ages. For big cats daily, choose Wildlife encounters.
Cost and conduct
Cost varies with route and nights. UWA's 2024–26 tariff lists bird walks at US$25 to US$40 a person, plus park entry; confirm for your dates. Keep back from nests; limit recorded calls.

Where can I look for a shoebill?
Mabamba Bay near Entebbe and the Albert Delta in Murchison Falls, where the park authority calls it commonly spotted. Akagera in Rwanda records it too. No sighting is promised.
What are Albertine Rift endemics?
Birds found only in the western Rift's mountain forests. Bwindi holds 23, among them the African green broadbill and Shelley's crimsonwing.
When do European migrants arrive?
Birds that breed in Europe and Asia are here roughly October to April. At Ngulia in Tsavo West, migrants land by the lodge lights on misty, moonless November and December nights.
Can I add birding to a gorilla trek or big-game safari?
Yes. Birders favour Bwindi's Ruhija sector and Mubwindi Swamp trail, so ask for Ruhija if birds matter. Safaris can add early starts.
