You want a luxury safari in Rwanda that delivers the gorillas without turning the trip into an endurance test. Perhaps you have a week, perhaps four nights after a safari in Kenya or Tanzania. You want a lodge at the end of the walk, and you want to know that the logistics have been thought through.
Rwanda is built for that traveller. The country is small, and the lodges around Volcanoes National Park are within a short drive of the trailhead. What you are paying for is time, comfort and a short route; Uganda vs Rwanda sets out the cost comparison.
The detail
The volcanoes. Volcanoes National Park is where the Rwanda gorilla trek happens. RDB, the Rwanda Development Board, gives the drive from Kigali to Musanze as 90 minutes, then on to Kinigi, the park headquarters, where the briefing is at 07:00. Operators quote two and a half to three hours door to door, and the lodge you choose affects it. The walk begins in farmland and climbs into bamboo and mist, with the volcano slopes above you. The top lodges here are Bisate, Singita Kwitonda and One&Only Gorilla's Nest. Helicopter transfers from Kigali take about 25 minutes, depending on the weather. The US State Department rates Rwanda "Level 3: Reconsider Travel" (4 June 2026) and says "Do not travel within 10 kilometers of Rwanda's border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo". By straight-line distance on OpenStreetMap data, the park headquarters at Kinigi is about 4.3 km from the DRC border and most of Volcanoes National Park lies within 10 km (our map check, 9 October 2026; the US has published no map of its strip). Read that and the UK position before you choose this route.
The permit and the rules. A permit is US$1,500 per person per trek, for foreigners, and covers one hour with one family. The minimum age is 15, a group is limited to eight visitors, and you keep at least seven metres from the animals. Do not trek if you are unwell. Rwanda doubled the permit from US$750 in May 2017 and raised the share that goes to local communities from US$37 to US$150 per permit. Gorilla trekking explains the walk; the comparison with Uganda is in Uganda vs Rwanda.
A November to May option. A 30 per cent low-season rate (about US$1,050) applies from November to May if you combine the gorilla permit with two nights in Akagera or Nyungwe, or one night in each, plus a paid activity. Each two-night stay earns one reduced permit per person; a second reduced trek needs another two nights, and the one-night-in-each option must be consecutive nights.
How many nights. Four nights: Kigali and one trek. About seven: add Akagera. About ten: add Nyungwe, by road or helicopter.
Akagera. Rwanda's savannah park lies east of Kigali. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, after a twenty-year absence, and eighteen eastern black rhinos returned in 2017. Magashi Camp, on Lake Rwanyakazinga in the north, is a small camp; the listed guidance is 8 and over for children. Allow around three hours or more by road from Kigali, depending on the gate and the camp. Akagera covers the park.
Nyungwe. One&Only Nyungwe House sits beside one of Africa's oldest rainforests, which has thirteen primate species. The canopy walkway is 160 metres long and about 70 metres above the forest floor. Chimpanzee trekking has a minimum age of 15 according to most operators (one says 16). The Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel within 10 kilometres of the Congo border in Rusizi District, including Kamembe Airport and the Lake Kivu islands, and travelling against that advice can invalidate your insurance. So reach Nyungwe by road, about five hours from Kigali, or by helicopter.
Kigali. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the resting place of more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, and is where most visitors begin to understand the country. Give it a morning, not a stop.
Seasons. Gorilla trekking runs all year; best time to visit Rwanda has the months.

Planning it with Nobu
Nobu designs Rwanda luxury journeys as tailor-made trips, and works out the order of lodges, whether to trek once or twice, and when to add Akagera. Permit dates, lodges and transfers depend on one another, so they are fixed together. Plan Your Journey is the place to start.
Is it right for you?
Rwanda suits you if you want gorillas with the least friction and the most comfort, if you have between four and ten nights, and if the permit and lodge prices are within reach. It is a good finish to a Kenya or Tanzania safari, and a good fit for a milestone trip or a honeymoon.
Choose something else if the permit cost weighs on you: Uganda's is US$800 (US$600 in April, May and November, not reschedulable), and luxury safari Uganda is the page for that route. If you want a long, wild, multi-park adventure, Uganda or luxury safari Tanzania suits better. Anyone under 15 cannot trek gorillas. Check when to go before you fix dates.
