Lake Manyara is a compact northern Tanzania park squeezed between the Rift escarpment and a shallow soda lake. Groundwater forest, elephants, prolific birds, flamingos and famously tree-climbing lions make it a varied gateway toward Ngorongoro and Serengeti.

A single drive can move from dense forest and hot springs to open lakeshore, giving Manyara unusual ecological range for its size. Elephants and birdlife are consistent strengths, while lion behaviour and sightings remain unpredictable.

The park works neatly as a first or final northern-circuit stop. Canopy walks, night drives and cultural visits depend on current access and permissions, with community encounters arranged respectfully through trusted local partners.

The long dry season

June–October is the main dry season, when thinner vegetation can make elephants and other game easier to see, alongside the year's busiest visitor period. Water levels and individual wildlife sightings vary, so tree-climbing lions and flamingo concentrations cannot be promised.

November–May

The green season

November–May is Manyara's green season, bringing lush forest, migrant birds and often larger flamingo numbers on a fuller lake, with fewer vehicles. Rain can affect tracks and water levels; the compact park remains worthwhile year-round, subject to current conditions.

When is the best time to visit Lake Manyara?

The dry season (June–October) for general game viewing, and the green season (November–May) for peak birding and flamingos; the park rewards year-round as a gateway stop.

Are the tree-climbing lions guaranteed at Lake Manyara?

No sighting is ever guaranteed, but Manyara is one of the few places where lions habitually rest in trees, and your guide will know where they have been seen.

How many days do you need at Lake Manyara?

Usually one night, or a half-day en route to Ngorongoro; add a night if birding is a priority.

Why are there flamingos at Lake Manyara?

The lake is alkaline (soda), which supports the algae flamingos feed on; numbers rise and fall with water levels through the seasons.
