Tsavo East is Kenya's vast, open red-earth wilderness, celebrated for elephant herds dusted ochre by its iron-rich soil. Broad plains, seasonal rivers and sparse traffic make it a powerful safari chapter between Nairobi and the Indian Ocean coast.

Compared with greener Tsavo West, the eastern park feels arid, exposed and immense, with game drives measured in distance and horizon. Elephant, lion and plains wildlife gather around rivers and waterholes across a landscape that absorbs vehicles.

Its position naturally supports bush-and-beach routes, linking wild country with Diani or the wider coast. Long drives and changing conditions reward patient travellers, while sightings remain governed by water, weather and natural wildlife movement.

late June to October and January to February

The drier seasons

Late June to October and January to February are dry, thinning vegetation and concentrating wildlife near rivers and waterholes. Firm tracks improve access across the huge park, with June to October forming the longer and busier dry season.

November–May

The green season

November to May brings short and long rains that green Tsavo's red earth, support newborn animals and exceptional birding, and reduce vehicle numbers. Thicker vegetation spreads wildlife more widely, so sightings may be harder and are never guaranteed.

Why are Tsavo's elephants red?

They bathe and dust themselves in the region's iron-rich red soil, which coats their skin ochre — the "red elephants" are a Tsavo signature, not a different species.

What's the difference between Tsavo East and Tsavo West?

Tsavo East is vast, flat, arid and open — elephant country on a grand scale; Tsavo West is hillier, greener and volcanic, with Mzima Springs, lava flows and a rhino sanctuary.

How many days do you need in Tsavo?

Two to three nights does one half justice; allow longer to combine East and West, given the distances involved.

Is Tsavo good for a bush-and-beach trip?

Ideally — Tsavo sits between Nairobi and the coast, making it the natural safari leg before continuing to Diani and the Indian Ocean.
