Rail & safari / Kenya
For rail lovers: the morning train to Tsavo East, then rail on to Mombasa and Diani.
The journey
One morning train, an afternoon in Tsavo East, then rail on to the sea.
The Madaraka Express is timetabled to leave Nairobi at 08:00 and reach Voi, Tsavo East’s station, at 12:02, leaving the afternoon for a first game drive. Two or three nights later, the same service carries you on to Mombasa Terminus by 14:00, and a short road transfer reaches Diani’s long beach.
This Nairobi to Mombasa train journey suits travellers who want the ride to be part of the trip. It runs on the morning train’s clock, so starts are early. For big cats, choose a Mara journey; for beach days without the rail, Kenya Safari & Beach.
Rail, red earth and a long beach: one line across southern Kenya, paced entirely on your terms.
Moments along the way
Bags through security, then the 08:00 pulls out of Syokimau towards the Athi plains.
Nairobi to Voi: KSh 1,050 Economy, 3,200 First, 8,540 Premium, one way.
03Dust baths in red soil colour Tsavo East’s elephants; no sighting is ever promised.
In 1898 man-eating lions halted work on the old railway through Tsavo.
Between Tsavo’s two parks, elephants are sometimes seen from the train, never promised.
From Miritini, Diani’s long beach is one to one and a half hours by road.
Where you’ll stay
Choose a comfort level, from Essential to Private Collection; it can differ at each stop. A camp near Voi Gate keeps the station transfer short; one deeper in Tsavo East adds hours.

A route with room to breathe
Nairobi → Voi → Mombasa → Diani → Nairobi, by train, road and one flight. Dates decide the timetable, so your proposal confirms each train and flight.
A sense of the days
Everything this morning is timed to the train. Bags go through security at the terminal, and your passport and ticket are checked at boarding; the ticket is in your name and cannot be passed on. Pack so you can lift every bag yourself. The timetable puts you at Voi around midday, after several stops. Where you sleep in Nairobi decides how early you leave.
From Voi station a vehicle takes you through the gate to camp for lunch. After a rest comes the first drive; stay in the vehicle except at designated areas, and expect to be back in camp by early evening. A camp close to the gate allows a full first drive, one deep in the park only a short one: ask where yours sits.
Drives start soon after the gates open and return for brunch, leaving the early afternoon for rest. KWS lists Aruba Dam, Mudanda Rock and Lugard’s Falls among the highlights, but the park is vast, so a day usually aims for one or two. Pack clothes that will not mind the red dust. Two nights give one full day; a third adds another.
This is a leaving day built around the train, so the morning is short. If time allows there is a brief early drive; otherwise breakfast, packing and the road to the station come first, with the boarding checks at the end. Ask the camp for a packed lunch. Allow a margin: the next train through Voi is not until the evening.
The train reaches Mombasa Terminus in the early afternoon, and a road transfer takes you south to Diani. Keep your seatbelt on for that drive. The rest of the day is for unpacking and a quiet dinner after a full travelling day. A late train or slow traffic moves your arrival, so keep the evening free of plans.
Beach days follow no schedule: swimming, walking the sand and, if you want it, a snorkel with a guide, keeping clear of live coral. Ask the staff about tides and currents before you swim. The flights to Wilson begin late in the morning and run into the afternoon; an evening international flight leaves a last morning free.
One Nairobi night, two or three in Tsavo East and four or five on the coast: seven to nine in all.

Good to know
The Madaraka Express, Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), links Nairobi Terminus at Syokimau with Mombasa Terminus at Miritini. The 08:00 Inter-County is timetabled at Athi River 08:19, Emali 09:27, Kibwezi 10:14, Mtito Andei 10:50, Voi 12:02, Miasenyi 12:41, Mariakani 13:27 and Mombasa 14:00; the others stop only at Voi. The line runs between Tsavo West and Tsavo East, and KWS lists Mtito Andei and Voi as their rail stops, at US$80 a day each, though the 2025 fee rise is before the courts.
Neither Safarilink nor AirKenya schedules flights to Tsavo East, so the train is the practical way in without a long drive, and it carries on to the coast: about four hours to Voi, then about two to Mombasa.
Elephants are the draw, often coated in red earth, and KWS lists maneless lions among the park’s highlights. No sighting is promised. KWS rules keep vehicles on roads, at 40 km/h and at least 20 metres from animals.
July to September suits both halves: drier in Tsavo, settled and breezy on the south coast. January and February are also drier. March to May bring the long rains, and October to early December the coast’s short rains.
Seven to nine. The Nairobi night guards the 08:00 against a late landing; two or three Tsavo nights give a full day of drives. Below seven, the two train days take too large a share, so choose Tsavo or the coast.
All three, but only one suits a safari. The 08:00 Inter-County is due at 12:02, in time for an afternoon drive; the 15:00 Express at 18:48, after gates shut at 18:00; the night train at 02:05.
Six hours by Inter-County, five and a half by Express. One way: Economy KSh 1,500, First 4,500, Premium 12,000; splitting at Voi costs about the same. Booking opens 60 days ahead. Online and by USSD, Economy and First need M-Pesa; stations and the Premium site take cards.
Government advice, checked October 2026: the US rates Kenya Level 2 (issued 28 July 2026); its Level 4, Do not travel, areas include the coast north of Malindi and Kilifi north of highway C103, and it excepts Tsavo National Park from its Tana River warning. The UK (updated 9 October 2026) advises against all but essential travel within 15 km of the coast between the Tana and Galana rivers. Neither warning list includes Voi, Tsavo East, Mombasa or Diani; that describes the lists, not conditions on the ground.
Malaria risk covers most of Kenya below 2,500 m, including Tsavo and the coast. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go
Guidance, not a forecast: rain shapes drives and coast days, and the train timetable can change with the season.
Aug / The drier months
Tsavo is mostly drier and the south coast settled, if breezier. Safarilink adds later Diani–Wilson flights in high season: January to March, mid-June to October and late December.
