Ol Kinyei Conservancy,

Ol Kinyei is a small community conservancy on the eastern Greater Mara, created when Maasai landowners leased grazing country for wildlife recovery. Very few beds across a generous area keep sightings private and vehicle pressure exceptionally low.

The conservancy helped prove a model that restores habitat while returning revenue to its landowners. Recovered grassland now supports predators and plains game, often allowing a guide to hold a sighting without another vehicle nearby.

Walking, night drives and off-road viewing can extend the experience beyond conventional game drives, subject to current conservancy rules. Respectful Maasai encounters connect visitors with the community partnership that made the protected landscape possible.

The drier seasons

Late June to October and January to February are drier, with shorter grass, easier tracking and strong resident predator viewing. The longer window overlaps wider Mara migration months, but herd movement and all wildlife sightings remain unguaranteed.

November to May

The green season

November to May brings lush plains, dramatic skies, newborn game and very few guests. Low bed numbers preserve privacy in every season, while rain, track conditions and wildlife distribution still vary across the conservancy each year.

What makes Ol Kinyei different from the Mara's other conservancies?

Ol Kinyei is one of the original community conservancies in the Greater Mara, and among the smallest-scale and most exclusive — it holds very few beds across a large area, so vehicle density stays exceptionally low compared with the larger conservancies nearby.

Is Ol Kinyei one of the first Maasai Mara conservancies?

Yes. It was a pioneer of the community-lease model, in which Maasai landowners set aside their land for wildlife in return for a lease income — a template later followed across much of the ecosystem.

Can you do walking safaris and night drives at Ol Kinyei?

Yes. As a private conservancy rather than the national reserve, Ol Kinyei permits walking safaris, night drives and off-road sightings, all with cap on vehicle numbers. Activity rules can change and differ by reserve, park, conservancy or community land; Nobu will confirm the current permission and operator arrangement before approval.

What wildlife will I see at Ol Kinyei Conservancy?

Resident big cats are the highlight — lion, cheetah and leopard — alongside elephant, buffalo, giraffe and abundant plains game, with nocturnal predators emerging on night drives.
