Arusha is the highland gateway beneath Mount Meru where northern Tanzania journeys gather momentum. From here, routes fan toward Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, while nearby forest, crater lakes and coffee estates reward an unhurried arrival.

Most travellers use Arusha to recover from a flight, meet guides and connect onward, but the city and surrounding highlands deserve attention. Coffee visits and heritage encounters offer context before the safari circuit begins.

The long dry season

June to October is the popular long dry season, with comfortable days, clearer mountain views and busy onward safari routes. December to February offers another warm, bright spell suited to Arusha National Park and city stays, subject to current cloud and weather conditions.

March to May

The long rains

March to May brings the long rains, greener landscapes and quieter streets, while Mount Meru often disappears into cloud. Lighter, intermittent short rains usually arrive around November; Arusha's timing often follows the requirements of the wider northern-circuit journey.

Is Arusha worth visiting, or just a stopover?

It is chiefly a gateway — the arrival and departure city for the northern circuit — but it rewards a night or two. Coffee estates, Mount Meru views and Arusha National Park make it a graceful first or last chapter rather than a Big-Five destination.

How far is Arusha from Kilimanjaro Airport?

Transfer time depends on the selected route, traffic, road conditions and current operations. Nobu will confirm the appropriate connection for the approved itinerary.

What can you see in Arusha National Park?

The Momella lakes and their flamingos, the forested Ngurdoto Crater, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and the park's signature black-and-white colobus monkeys — all beneath Mount Meru. There are no lion, so it is scenery and gentle wildlife rather than a predator-driven safari.

Can you go on a safari from Arusha?

Arusha is the launch point for the entire northern circuit: the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara all begin here, by road or light aircraft. Arusha National Park itself offers a light half-day of wildlife and walking on the city's doorstep.

How many nights should you spend in Arusha?

One night is enough to arrive and reset; two lets you add Arusha National Park and a coffee estate. It works best as bookends to a northern-Tanzania journey rather than a destination in itself.
