Matemwe is Zanzibar's closest mainland-island base for Mnemba Atoll, pairing reef access with a working fishing and seaweed-farming village. Thoughtful barefoot retreats line the long northeastern shore, making it ideal for travellers who place diving and snorkelling first.

Short crossings put divers and snorkellers on Mnemba's protected reef before boats arriving from farther away. The reef-protected lagoon also supports dhow sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding, with turtles and dolphins sometimes seen offshore but never guaranteed.

Onshore, seaweed frames and fishing dhows reveal a coast still organised around tides and livelihoods. Guided visits should be respectful and locally arranged, while the area's restrained lodges provide privacy without erasing the village context.

The drier coast

June to October brings the calmest seas and clearest underwater visibility, making it the strongest period for diving Mnemba. December to February is warm and largely dry, another excellent window for the reef, lagoon and beach.

March to May

The long rains

March to May carries heavy rain and rougher water that can limit atoll crossings, while November's short rains are lighter. Shore swimming is easiest around high tide, and all marine outings remain subject to current sea and weather conditions.

Is Matemwe the best base for diving Mnemba Atoll?

Yes. Matemwe sits directly opposite Mnemba on Zanzibar's north-east coast, making it the closest shore base for diving and snorkelling the island's finest reef and marine park — crossings are short, so you can be on the reef early.

When is the best time to visit Matemwe?

The dry season from June to October gives the calmest seas and best underwater visibility for Mnemba; December to February is also warm and largely dry.

What is Matemwe like as a village?

It remains a genuine, working shoreline — a fishing and seaweed-farming community where women tend seaweed frames at low tide. That authenticity sits alongside some of the island's most refined barefoot-luxury lodges.

Can you swim at Matemwe, and how does the tide work?

The offshore reef protects a calm, shallow lagoon, but the tidal swing is strong: swimming from the shore is easiest around high water, when the lagoon fills. At low tide the water draws back to expose the sand flats and seaweed farms.

How far is Matemwe from Zanzibar airport?

Can I pair Matemwe with a safari?

Easily. Zanzibar works as a natural three-to-five day finale to a Tanzania or Kenya safari, with ZNZ well connected to Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
