01Mnemba in the morning
Tides set departure times; an early boat may help avoid the busiest period.

Diving / Tanzania
From Mnemba’s gentle slopes to Pemba’s channel walls and Mafia’s bay, planned around your dives.
The journey
Mnemba’s slopes first, Pemba’s walls next, Mafia’s bay last: three islands, three kinds of water.
You land on Unguja, Zanzibar’s main island, and base on the north-east coast opposite Mnemba. A short flight north reaches Pemba, where reefs drop into the channel. Then a full day’s flying, through Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam, brings you to Mafia’s marine park.
Zanzibar Dive is a diving holiday for certified divers, built around Mnemba diving, Pemba Island diving and Mafia’s bay. It is not for beginners or non-divers: Pemba’s walls ask for experience, and currents set the schedule. Snorkelling companions are better served by Zanzibar & Mafia.
Nine to twelve nights, with every flight, boat day and rest day arranged around your dives, on your terms.
Moments along the way
01Tides set departure times; an early boat may help avoid the busiest period.
Coastal allows 15 kg with hand baggage, Auric 20 kg: weigh your kit first.
Some Pemba sites are dived only when the current eases.
Sheltered sites inside Chole Bay contrast with outer reefs selected for your experience and conditions.
In season, whale sharks are met as a surface swim; sightings are never certain.
A day ashore before every flight leaves time between your last dive and take-off.
Where you’ll stay
Each stay is chosen for its dive centre and boat ride. Unguja runs from Essential to Private Collection, Pemba from Expedition to Elevated, and Mafia has a few small lodges, so tell us your level.

A route with room to breathe
Zanzibar airport → Matemwe → Pemba → Mafia → Dar es Salaam. Flight lines are indicative: your proposal confirms intermediate stops, transfers and a surface interval before each departure.
A sense of the days
Land, drive to the north-east coast and spend the first day on kit checks and sleep. Diving starts tomorrow.
Boat times follow the tide. Start with sites the centre judges suitable, keep fins off coral and leave the preflight day ashore.
Drive to the airport and fly about 30 minutes north. Coastal’s standard allowance is 15 kg, Auric’s 20 kg, including hand baggage.
Choose walls or Misali with the centre, according to your experience and conditions. Keep the day before the next flight ashore.
Reserve today for Pemba to Mafia. Auric publishes a service taking about three hours; confirm intermediate stops and both airport transfers.
Choose bay or outer-reef sites with the centre. Keep the last day ashore and confirm your agreed surface interval before flying.
Three or four nights per base: nine to twelve overall. Arrival days and preflight days stay dry; confirmed dive sessions depend on flight times.

Good to know
Unguja and Pemba belong to Zanzibar; Mafia lies separately off mainland Tanzania. On this route you stay near Matemwe for Mnemba, then move north to Pemba and south to Chole Bay. Marine charges depend on the conservation area and activity, so ask for an itemised quote covering every planned dive and boat outing. Published 2021 and 2025 fee tables are historical references, not confirmation of the amount payable on your dates.
Mnemba offers sloping reefs, Pemba adds channel walls, and Mafia brings Chole Bay and seasonal whale-shark outings. Each centre selects suitable sites. The trade-off is three flight days plus preflight surface intervals; one island leaves more time for diving.
A guided surface swim, with sightings most common from October to February in published research. The sharks’ core habitat is largely outside the marine park. Choose an operator following the local code: keep distance, never touch or block a shark, and avoid crowding it.
Sources conflict, so no single month wins. The overlap is October to February: Mafia’s operators give those months and one Pemba operator says October to March. April and May are lean. Ask each centre for its dates.
Three nights leave one main dive day if arrival and preflight days stay dry; four add another or weather margin. Count confirmed sessions in the proposal, with the agreed surface interval before every island hop and final flight.
DAN recommends at least 12 hours after one no-decompression dive, 18 after repeated no-decompression diving, and substantially longer after decompression dives. Its guidance concerns symptom-free divers and cabin altitudes of 2,000–8,000 feet. Confirm your actual flight profile and interval with a diving doctor.
Pemba has sites for different experience levels. One centre lists Advanced divers for a 25 m wall and deep certification where another wall starts at 30 m. Share your logbook and recent experience; the centre decides which sites suit conditions.
Government advice, checked October 2026: the US rates Tanzania, including its islands, Level 3, Reconsider travel (issued 31 October 2025). The UK advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the border with Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. Its crime warnings include Zanzibar. The UK Air Safety List names Tanzania-certified airlines, which are banned from commercial services to, from and within the UK. Read both advisories before travelling.
Malaria occurs on these islands: tell your travel clinic you dive. DAN’s preflight guidance depends on dive profile and cabin altitude; longer gaps reduce risk without eliminating it. Agree every island hop with your dive centre and diving doctor, and confirm emergency arrangements. Yellow fever certification depends on arrival history. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go
Guidance only: the three dive windows overlap for part of the year, and sources disagree at the edges. Ask each centre for its dates.
Jan / Dry, windows overlap
December to February overlaps the broad Pemba and Mafia diving windows cited by operators. Rain, wind and currents still vary; ask all three centres which sites they expect to offer.
