Solio
Solio is a private wildlife conservancy in Kenya's Central Highlands, set on the plain between the Aberdare range and Mount Kenya near Nanyuki. It is one of the continent's most successful rhino breeding sanctuaries, holding some of the highest densities of black and white rhino anywhere — which makes for unusually close and reliable rhino sightings, alongside plains game and rich birding in an intimate, low-vehicle setting.
Why visit
Some places on a Kenya map earn their place by scale; Solio earns it by focus. This is a private sanctuary given almost entirely to one purpose — the recovery of the rhino — and it has done that work better than almost anywhere on the continent. The result is a reserve where an animal that is elusive and endangered across most of Africa is, here, simply present: grazing in the open, at ease, often within an unhurried view.
What makes Solio feel different from the larger Laikipia conservancies is its scale and its stillness. This is a compact, fenced sanctuary rather than a sprawling landscape, which concentrates the wildlife and keeps vehicle numbers low. You are rarely sharing a sighting. The plain itself is wide and pale, ringed by the dark forested wall of the Aberdares on one side and the snow-touched summit of Mount Kenya on the other — a highland setting that gives every game drive a horizon worth stopping for.

Wildlife & landscapes
Solio is rhino country first and foremost. This is the reason to come, and it delivers.
Around the rhino, the plain holds a strong cast of plains game: zebra, buffalo, giraffe, eland, waterbuck, impala and gazelle, with plains predators including lion, cheetah and hyena present across the sanctuary. It is not a Big Five spectacle in the manner of the Mara — it is a more measured, more focused wilderness, where the rhino are the headline and the supporting cast is genuine and abundant.
Birding is a quiet triumph here. The mix of open grassland, acacia, riverine strips and highland edge draws a rich variety of species, and Solio is well regarded among birders for both raptors and grassland birds. Above all of it stands the landscape itself — the great flat plain held between the Aberdare range to the west and Mount Kenya to the east, a highland corridor that gives the sanctuary its cool air, its clarity of light, and its unmistakable sense of place.
Best time to visit
Solio rewards the traveller year-round, but the dry seasons are the classic windows: late June to October and again January to February bring clear highland skies, easier tracks and wildlife drawn to reliable water — the most comfortable time for game drives and photography. The Central Highlands sit at altitude, so days are bright and mornings and evenings are genuinely cool; pack a warm layer for early drives whatever the month.
The green seasons — the long rains around March to May and the short rains around November — bring lush plains, dramatic skies over the two mountain ranges, newborn plains game and excellent birding, with fewer visitors and softer light for photography.
