Why visit

Nairobi National Park is a true wilderness pressed right up against the edge of Nairobi — wildlife on one horizon, skyline on the other — and that single, improbable contrast is its whole magic.
It is also the most practical wild encounter in Kenya. Minutes from the city centre and the international airport, the park turns an arrival morning or a departure day into a real safari rather than dead time. Open plains, black rhino, lion, buffalo and giraffe are all here, close enough to the runway that the journey barely begins before the wild does.
For first-timers it is a thrilling overture; for those with only a day, it is a complete safari in itself.
Wildlife & landscapes
For its size the park holds remarkable variety. It is one of Kenya's most successful black rhino sanctuaries, with a strong population on open ground. Add lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, eland, hartebeest and abundant plains game across rolling savannah grassland, dotted with acacia and cut by seasonal watercourses and small dams. Elephant are absent — the park is unfenced on its southern side to allow seasonal wildlife movement but too small for elephant. Birdlife is excellent, with over 500 recorded species. The defining feature is the backdrop: wild plains in the foreground, the Nairobi skyline and aircraft on approach behind — a juxtaposition found nowhere else in Africa.
Best time to visit Nairobi National Park
The park is open and rewarding year-round, and its proximity to the city makes it an easy stop in any season. The dry months — late June to October and January to February — bring firmer tracks and wildlife concentrated near water, the easiest game viewing. The green season (November–May) brings lush plains, newborn animals and superb birding, with fewer vehicles. Early morning is the prime window in every season — cooler, more active wildlife, and the city light at its best behind the plains. Because most visits are a half or full day, season matters less here than timing the drive for dawn.
