Kendwa spreads along Zanzibar's northwestern shore, where limited tidal retreat allows swimming through much of the day. Wide sand, clear water, established dive schools and an open western horizon make it a spacious, relaxed counterpart to nearby Nungwi.

The beach stays broad and the sea accessible across the tidal cycle, supporting unhurried swimming, paddling and diving without a rigid timetable. Properties sit farther apart than in Nungwi, giving this northern coast a looser, calmer feel.

Kendwa faces the sunset directly, so dhow sails and evening beach walks become natural daily rituals. Its full-moon gathering brings periodic energy, while reef trips, fishing charters and short visits to Nungwi add variety.

The drier coast

June to October brings calm seas, reliable sunshine and the strongest underwater visibility for diving. December to February is warm and largely dry, another comfortable period for all-day swimming, sailing and time on the northwestern beach.

March to May

The long rains

March to May carries heavy rain and rougher water that can restrict boats and diving, while November's short rains are lighter. Kendwa remains comparatively usable through shoulder months; full-moon events follow the lunar calendar and current local schedules.

Why can you swim all day at Kendwa?

Kendwa shares the north-west tip's tidal pattern, where the sea stays close to the shore throughout the day. Much of Zanzibar's east coast sees significant tidal retreat that leaves wide, exposed sandflats at low water; Kendwa's geography keeps swimmable water at the beach across the full tidal cycle.

What's the difference between Kendwa and Nungwi?

They sit side by side on the same north-west tip and share the same all-day sea, but Nungwi is the busier working village with dhow yards and dawn fishing boats, while Kendwa is calmer, more open and spread out, with west-facing sunsets and a laid-back scene. See Nungwi.

Is Kendwa good for diving?

Yes. Sheltered from the south-east monsoon, the north-west corner has calmer seas and a long diving window, and Kendwa has established dive schools on the beach. Boats reach the richer reefs of Mnemba Atoll and its marine park.

When can you see the full-moon party at Kendwa?

Kendwa's well-known full-moon gathering is held to the lunar calendar; time your nights to a full moon if you want to catch it, and your travel designer can align your stay.

How far is Kendwa from Zanzibar airport?

Transfer time depends on the selected route, traffic, road conditions and current operations. Nobu will confirm the appropriate connection for the approved itinerary.

Can I pair Kendwa with a safari?

Easily. Zanzibar works as a natural three-to-five day finale to a Tanzania or Kenya safari, with ZNZ well connected to Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
