Watamu is a quiet north-coast village shaped by white-sand coves, Mida Creek and one of Kenya's oldest protected marine parks. Turtle conservation, coral gardens and mangrove channels suit travellers who want the natural life of the ocean alongside an easy beach stay.

Weathered coral divides Watamu's shore into sheltered bays, while protected reefs draw snorkellers and divers. Sea turtles nest along this coast, supported by long-running local conservation, making marine life central to the destination's character.

December to March generally brings Watamu's brightest skies and clearest seas, favouring diving, snorkelling and beach time. July to October is cooler, dry and breezier under the monsoon, while daily visibility and tides still shape marine plans.

The greener months

December to March remains the headline warm, dry window. The long rains from April to June bring wetter days and rougher water, creating a quieter coast; current sea conditions and operator schedules should guide every reef excursion.

What is Watamu known for?

Its marine national park: a protected reef with snorkelling and diving, turtle nesting beaches and the mangrove channels of Mida Creek — the coast's most natural, wildlife-rich stretch.

Can you see turtles in Watamu?

Yes. Watamu's beaches are an important nesting site, supported by a long-standing local marine conservation effort, and turtles are regularly seen on the reef.

Is Watamu better than Diani?

They are different coasts: Watamu is quieter and more marine-park focused, Diani longer and livelier. Many of our journeys favour Watamu for snorkelling and nature, Diani for a broad beach scene.
