Mgahinga Gorilla National Park gives Uganda's primate journey a volcanic setting in the far south-west. The Virunga slopes rise where Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo meet, with gorilla trekking, golden monkeys and mountain scenery shaping its appeal.

Bamboo and heather give way to higher slopes and cloud, creating a different atmosphere from Bwindi's dense forest. The volcanoes frame the experience, making the landscape itself an important part of a carefully paced stay.

The long dry season

June–September and the shorter December–February window generally give firmer trekking ground and clearer volcanic views. These periods can favour tracking and climbing, although high-altitude weather changes quickly. Confirm the chosen activity, permits and suitable pace before committing.

March–May and October–November

The wetter seasons

March–May and October–November bring heavier rain and slippery slopes, alongside lush scenery and fewer travellers. Cool mornings and changing mountain weather matter in every month. Plan around underfoot conditions and confirmed activity arrangements rather than a guaranteed encounter.

What is the difference between Mgahinga and Bwindi for gorilla trekking?

Bwindi is dense, enclosing rainforest with the larger gorilla population; Mgahinga is open, volcanic Virunga country — smaller, quieter, and the only Ugandan park where you can also track golden monkeys. Many travellers combine the two.

Can you see golden monkeys in Mgahinga?

Yes. Mgahinga is one of the very few places on earth to track golden monkeys, an endemic Virunga primate found in the park's bamboo forest, alongside its habituated mountain gorilla group.

How many days do you need in Mgahinga?

Two to three nights lets you combine a gorilla trek, golden-monkey tracking and a volcano hike or the Batwa Trail without rushing.

Which volcanoes can you climb in Mgahinga?

Three: Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo — each a demanding day climb, with Muhabura the highest at 4,127m and views across Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC.

Is Mgahinga better than Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park?
