Experience

Chimpanzee trekking

Chimpanzee trekking is a guided forest trek to a habituated community of wild chimpanzees. The premier destination is Uganda's Kibale National Park, with tracking also in Nyungwe (Rwanda) and Mahale (Tanzania). A permit is required; tracking runs year-round, easiest in the drier months.

Intro

You hear them before you see them — the pant-hoots building through the canopy until the forest seems to ring with them. Then you find the group overhead, feeding, grooming, arguing: our closest cousins, entirely wild, entirely themselves.

Chimpanzee trekking has a different electricity from gorilla trekking. Gorillas often feel still, grounded and contemplative. Chimps are kinetic: calling, climbing, vanishing, reappearing, drumming on buttress roots and moving the whole forest around them. That energy is the reason the experience feels so alive.

The detail

Led by trackers, you walk the forest until you reach the community, then spend time beneath them as they move. Chimps range faster and higher than gorillas, so it can be quicker to reach them but more mobile once there. Kibale holds an exceptional diversity of primates alongside the chimps; for the dedicated, a habituation experience gives a longer day with researchers and a community still being habituated.

The standard tracking experience usually focuses on a habituated community and a limited time once found. The habituation experience is different: longer, more immersive and less predictable, with a community still becoming comfortable around researchers and guides. It suits travellers who love behaviour, forest hours and the rough edges of genuine fieldwork.

Kibale is the classic choice because the forest is accessible, primate-rich and pairs naturally with Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi or a wider Uganda route. Nyungwe in Rwanda can work beautifully inside a Rwanda journey, while Mahale in Tanzania is more remote and expeditionary. The right choice depends on whether chimps are the main event or part of a larger primate story.

The forest day should be paced with care. Chimp calls can pull the group quickly through the trees, and sightings may shift from ground level to canopy in minutes. Good footwear, light rain gear and a realistic briefing make the difference between feeling hurried and feeling ready.

Key facts

Where: Kibale (Uganda) · Nyungwe (Rwanda) · Mahale (Tanzania). Permit: required, limited daily. Best: dry seasons (Jun–Sep, Dec–Feb). Duration: a tracking morning; habituation a full day. Suits: reasonably mobile travellers. Character: more active and vocal than gorilla trekking.

Why Nobu for this

Chimps pair beautifully with gorillas for a complete primate journey. We secure permits, place you near the trailhead, and can add the longer habituation day where it's available. We also manage the pacing, because two forest treks back to back can be thrilling but tiring if transfers and lodge choices are careless.

For Uganda, that might mean Kibale before Bwindi, with enough time between forest days. For Rwanda, it might mean Nyungwe and Volcanoes arranged as a polished primate arc. The experience should feel like a story, not a stack of permits.

Suitability — "right for you if…"

You're drawn to primates and forest, and you're comfortable walking uneven trails for a few hours. We tailor the effort and can pair it with gentler days. It is especially right if animal behaviour fascinates you and you do not mind looking up, moving often and accepting that forest sightings are rarely staged.

If you want one deeply still wildlife encounter, gorillas may suit you better. If you want energy, sound, social behaviour and a forest that feels in motion, chimps are unforgettable.

Common questions

Where is the best chimpanzee trekking?
Uganda's Kibale National Park — East Africa's primate capital — with strong tracking also in Nyungwe (Rwanda) and Mahale (Tanzania).
How is chimp trekking different from gorilla trekking?
Chimps move faster and higher in the canopy, so it's more mobile and often quicker to reach them; both need a permit and a guided trek.
Can you do a chimpanzee habituation experience?
Yes, where available — a longer day accompanying a community being habituated, alongside researchers.
When is the best time to go?
Year-round, with the dry seasons (June–September, December–February) giving easier forest trails. See → [Best time to visit Uganda](/guides/best-time-to-visit-uganda).
Can I do chimps and gorillas on one trip?
Yes. Uganda is especially strong for this, with Kibale for chimps and Bwindi for gorillas when the route is paced properly.
Is chimp trekking harder than gorilla trekking?
Not always, but it is often more mobile once you find them because chimps move quickly through the canopy.
Should I choose tracking or habituation?
Choose tracking for a shorter, more predictable forest morning; choose habituation if you want a longer, more research-like day.
