Matemwe is the fishing village closest to Mnemba Atoll, a long white beach where outrigger boats rest on the sand and the lagoon empties and refills twice a day. The hotels here ask different things of you: a cliffside dive lodge, a room inside a villa and a resort suite are three different holidays. The best hotels in Matemwe are therefore ordered by fit for purpose, not price.
Matemwe leads this shortlist. Uroa follows as a clearly labelled alternative for travellers whose priority is the hotel and its shore rather than a Matemwe address; Pongwe's cove hotels are covered on the Kiwengwa list. The Matemwe–Kiwengwa comparison owns the wider choice of village; this page stays with individual places to stay. Where a property's own pages disagree with themselves, we say so in the entry.
How to choose
Frontage and the way into the water. The north-east lagoon sits behind a fringing reef. At low tide the water pulls back a long way across sand and seagrass; at mid and high tide it returns as a broad, shallow sea. Zanziblue, for example, describes swimming at mid and high tide. Whether your room opens onto sand, sits above a cliff or reaches the shore through shared grounds is the question to settle first. Use how Zanzibar's tides work for the explanation and the swimming-frontage hotel shortlist if sea access drives the holiday.
A reef base or a hotel-centred stay. Boats for Mnemba leave from Matemwe's own beach, which is usually described as the shortest crossing. Mnemba's marine conservation fee, introduced in September 2025, is US$25 per adult and US$10 per child aged 5–15; confirm it at booking. Sunshine publishes an in-house dive centre; The Mora offers resort dining and pools. The Mora's own page quotes about five minutes by boat, while operators give longer times from other beaches, so ask for the crossing time on your day. The Mnemba snorkelling page and diving guide handle the activities themselves.
Reef and village manners. Mnemba is a fishing-free conservation area, so treat the reef as protected water: keep hands and fins off the coral and leave shells and sea life where they are. On the beach, walk round seaweed lines and fishing gear, because the flats are a working shore for the village.
Walkability and evenings. Map the route from the property to the places you want to reach, including a land route home when the tide is in. Beach walks that look easy in photographs can be cut off at high water, so choose a stay whose own dining you would enjoy most evenings. The restaurant story covers eating out; during Ramadan, service arrangements should be set for your dates. For a festive stay, use the Christmas and New Year story.
Families, couples and room boundaries. Kasha is often described as adults-only, but its own site does not state an age rule, so ask before you book. Zanziblue sells rooms within villas as well as whole villas, so what is private and what is shared matters. Use the family hotel list or adults-only and honeymoon list for the wider comparison.

The list
Matemwe — choose the format first
Sunshine Marine Lodge
Elevated · beachfront, Matemwe · best for a lodge with an in-house dive centre
Sunshine sits on a cliff facing east over Mnemba, with the sea breeze moving through the rooms, pools in the grounds and its own Dive Point Zanzibar centre. Start here if diving or snorkelling shapes your days and you want a lodge between outings. Look elsewhere if you want to walk straight from your room onto sand. Official lodge description.
The Mora Zanzibar
Elevated · beachfront, Matemwe · best for resort facilities beside Muyuni Beach
The Mora spreads across beachfront grounds on Muyuni Beach, with white sand, several pools, varied dining and family suites with separate bedrooms. It suits travellers who want the resort to carry the hours between outings rather than a small lodge with one dining room. Room totals vary between listings and its own pages give different kids' club ages, so ask for the current club age rule if childcare matters. Official resort.
Zanziblue Boutique Villas
Elevated · beachfront, Matemwe · best for choosing between a villa and a room within one
Zanziblue's villas sit in flowering gardens under palms, a few steps from the sea, with kitchens, living areas and dip pools; individual rooms share those kitchen and living spaces. This suits parties who want to set the boundary of their stay carefully. A room reservation is a different arrangement from taking a whole villa, and some pools belong only to certain categories, so the exact unit matters. Official accommodation.
Kasha Boutique Luxury Hotel
Elevated · beachfront, Matemwe · best for a sea-front room with its own terrace
Kasha offers sea-front, sea-view and garden rooms with private terraces and deck beds, finished in Swahili style with touches of bright colour. Choose it when the room and its outlook are the reason to go. Its room page contradicts itself on one category's pool and on the total number of rooms. Look elsewhere if you need a settled pool and a stated age rule before you commit. Official rooms.
Uroa alternative — choose for its own stay, not an easy Mnemba run
Dream of Zanzibar
Elevated · beachfront, Uroa · best for a resort stay centred on pool and dining
Dream's operator site describes white two-storey buildings on Uroa's beach, garden and ocean suites, a large pool overlooking the sea and all-inclusive dining. It suits travellers who want meals and relaxation within the property. The written inclusions matter more than the all-inclusive label, which does not cover every activity. Look elsewhere if you want a small, quiet lodge without resort evenings, or plan repeated Mnemba mornings. Official property website.
If none of these fit
For a broader purpose-led selection, return to Zanzibar hotels by purpose. For household privacy, continue to villas and private houses; for accommodation on Mnemba itself, use the private-island shortlist. The luxury and affordable holiday stories address the wider travel brief.
Expert Africa reported a refurbishment closure at Matemwe Lodge from November 2022, while other agents still list an April–May closure. Matemwe Lodge, Matemwe Retreat and Matemwe Beach Village are not recommended here while their status is unclear; ask for the current position on each before you choose one.
Planning it with Nobu
Nobu's story-led approach gives the coast a purpose within the journey: reef mornings, time together or rest after safari. The north-east suits you if you like an early boat to the reef, a long walk on the flats at low tide and a quieter village shore. Look at Paje instead if you want a livelier beach and kite schools, or Kendwa if you want a beach that is usually easier to swim from; it still depends on the tide. Which properties Nobu offers is confirmed in your proposal.
