How can an affordable Zanzibar holiday still feel like yours?

An affordable Zanzibar holiday starts with a small guesthouse or bungalow and spends on the comforts you will use every day, such as a good bed, the right cooling and a base near where you want to eat. Flights, Tanzania's mandatory inbound insurance and any marine-park fee for the boat trips you choose are fixed, while the room category, the coast, the season and the number of nights are yours to change. On a week's island stay the room is usually the biggest line after flights, and season and room category move it most.

Start here

Last checked: October 2026.

You might be a couple adding four nights of sea after a Tanzania safari, or a small family who want a week of island time without a resort bill. Either way the worry is the same: that keeping the total sensible will quietly remove the thing you came for. An affordable Zanzibar holiday should still leave room for pleasure — a comfortable bed, breakfast without a rush and evenings beyond the room. Picture a veranda on the east coast at low tide, with the lagoon drawn back to a silver line across the sand.

Start with what you would miss if it were taken away. Air conditioning, a pool, a sea view, independent dinners or help on arrival might be essential to you and irrelevant to someone else. Name yours before comparing totals, so a saving never removes the very reason for the trip.

The detail

Fixed versus changeable. Some costs move with your choices and some do not. Knowing which is which is most of the work. Hotel rates are not printed here: they move with dates and room category, so a written proposal gives them in full.

CostFixed or changeableWhat it is
International flightsFixed for your dates and routeShortening the island stay does not shrink the fare
Tanzania inbound insuranceFixed per personAbout US$44 adult on the Zanzibar scheme (mainland scheme quoted at the same adult figure by secondary sources; confirm); Zanzibar child rate about US$22 (3–17; sources differ on the band); bought for your first port of entry
Mnemba marine area feeFixed if you choose the tripUS$25 adult, US$10 child (5–15) for non-East-African visitors; East African citizens pay less, and residents' rates differ; the operator quotes the rate that applies

Verdict by traveller. If sleep depends on cooling, protect the air-conditioned room and save on the coast or the season. If you spend your days outdoors, a garden fan room on the east coast is the value choice. If sea swimming matters most, the north tip is usually the better fit, though the water still rises and falls with the tide.

Use our Essential tier as the starting point, then compare the rooms. Blue Oyster Hotel in Jambiani, Evergreen Bungalows in Bwejuu and Flame Tree Cottages in Nungwi all sit in our Essential tier, and they show why the room matters more than the label. Blue Oyster offers garden-view and sea-view rooms with ceiling fans. Evergreen has beachfront and garden bungalows, uses fans rather than air conditioning and includes breakfast. Flame Tree publishes air-conditioned ensuite cottages and a garden pool. For a wider shortlist, see hotels by purpose.

Choose the coast for how you live. Blue Oyster and Evergreen are on the east coast, where the lagoon draws back a long way at low tide and the shoreline becomes a working, walkable place. That suits someone who values a veranda and the rhythm of the tide over a resort programme. Flame Tree sits on the north tip at Nungwi, where the sea usually draws back less far than on the east coast. If a pool is non-negotiable, the property's own site is the place to see it; if sea swimming is the point, start with the swimmable-frontage shortlist.

Compare quieter dates honestly. The long rains fall roughly March to May and the short rains around November. Published cost guides name mid-April to mid-June and mid-October to mid-December as lower-price windows; treat them as dates to ask about, not as a saving. Moving outside the busiest holiday weeks is a fair question to put to your designer, and the answer comes from comparing quotations for both sets of dates, not from a seasonal rule. Opening and staffing in the wettest weeks vary by property, so they vary by year. The weather judgement itself lives in travelling during the rainy season.

Reduce moves before reducing enjoyment. One well-placed base saves the cost and the half-day lost to each relocation. Work out which evenings you want away from the hotel and choose somewhere that makes them easy; a pretty room far from the places you want to eat creates its own transport bill. Paje or Jambiani settles the village choice, and our guide to where to eat in Zanzibar covers the tables worth leaving for.

Treat the insurance as a fixed line. It is paid per person and bought only for your first port of entry, so the mandatory insurance guide sets out which scheme applies to your route.

Pay marine fees willingly. The Mnemba and other conservation-area fees apply only when you take a boat into those protected waters, so a quotation should show whether they are included before you compare two trips. A lower boat price that leaves the fee out is not the better offer. The lowest-priced dolphin boats at Kizimkazi are often the ones that chase pods; a licensed, small-boat trip is usually the better value, as the Kizimkazi dolphins page explains.

Get a total you can compare. A written proposal should name the room, nights, meals, transfers, activities and exclusions, with discretionary dining and outings shown separately. Then choose a length that leaves unhurried time, using how long to stay. If the island follows a Tanzania safari, the affordable safari story covers the mainland choices; do not expect the island to make up for an unsuitable safari.

Key facts

  • Starting tier: Essential, priced by current quotation.
  • Fixed costs: flights; Tanzania inbound insurance (about US$44 adult, Zanzibar child about US$22; bought for your first port of entry); marine fees only if you take the trip (for non-East-African visitors: Mnemba US$25 adult / US$10 child; other areas US$10 / US$5).
  • Insurance rule: one policy, bought for your first port of entry, valid up to 92 days; other policies not accepted.
  • Changeable choices: room category, coast, season, length and number of hotel moves.
  • East-coast trade-off: a strongly tidal lagoon; the north tip behaves differently.
  • Quieter months: long rains roughly March–May, short rains around November; the property's opening dates matter.
  • Best comparison: the full included total, plus the extras you are likely to add.

Planning it with Nobu

Nobu's approach starts with how you want the holiday to feel, then gives those priorities a clear place in the plan and the total. Tell your designer which comforts you will keep and where you can bend; a proposal is designed to show what that choice changes. Which properties Nobu uses for a given trip is set out in that proposal.

Is it right for you?

This is right for you if you are a couple or a small family planning four to seven island nights, on their own or as the pause after a Tanzania safari, and you would rather choose deliberately than pay for facilities you will not use. It suits travellers who enjoy a small, characterful property, a veranda and a shoreline that changes with the tide.

Look elsewhere if you need a resort's full facilities — several restaurants, a spa, a kids' club — or if you want sea swimming at most states of the tide; start with family hotel choices or the swimmable-frontage shortlist above. If privacy and personal service are what you want to protect, read luxury Zanzibar. A lower room tier should never replace something your party genuinely needs.

A few things worth knowing

Good questions.
Straight answers.

The details matter. Bring anything else into your planning conversation.

Does an Essential-tier Zanzibar stay always cost less than a Signature stay?

No. The tier describes the style of property, while dates, room category and inclusions set the quotation. Compare equivalent stays on the same dates.

Can choosing a garden room make my Zanzibar holiday more affordable?

Often, if the outlook matters less than your other priorities. Compare both categories on the same dates before deciding.

Is a shorter island stay always the best way to reduce the total?

No. It removes accommodation nights, but flights, insurance and arrival transfers stay the same. Weigh that saving against the unhurried time you lose.

Which extras should I ask about before accepting a Zanzibar proposal?

Transfers, meals, drinks, marine-park fees and any excluded services are the usual extras to list. A written included total makes different proposals easy to compare.
