The best restaurants in Zanzibar are spread across the island, so the useful choice is the setting first and the table second. The old town puts kitchens on rooftops above stone lanes; the beach villages put them beside a working shore. A meal can explain the island without turning dinner into a lesson.
This shortlist mixes independent restaurants and hotel dining rooms. Each venue is described from its own website, menu or reservation channel, and each source is linked below. Lukmaan has no official site, so its details come from guide listings and need checking before you go. Dish names belong in what to eat in Zanzibar; for a lower-spend street-food evening, the market has its own Forodhani story.

The story
A port's table, still changing. Stone Town's kitchens combine island produce with the tastes of residents and international guests, so a Mediterranean dish beside a Swahili one is part of the present, not a departure from it. The town's history explains the setting: it has been on the World Heritage List since 2000, and UNESCO's account gives the wider context.
Stone Town: a waterfront table or a rooftop meal. 6 Degrees South, on Shangani Waterfront, is the flexible choice: order from the menu in the dining room, then climb to its rooftop bar for a sundowner as the sun sets over the water. It publishes daily opening hours and a single reservation form, so say which part of the venue you want. Official restaurant and reservations.
Emerson Spice Rooftop Tea House is the destination dinner. Guests gather on the hotel roof for sundowners, with the sights and sounds of the old town below, before a seafood tasting menu served at a set hour. The operator asks for advance reservations and also serves lunch. Raise dietary substitutions when you reserve. Emerson's dining page.
The north: seafood by the beach, or a resort dining room. Baraka Beach Restaurant, in Nungwi, is the independent, unfussy option: a relaxed table by the sea with no dress code, and a menu of grilled fish, octopus, calamari, prawns and lobster alongside pizza and salads. Menu prices are not on its site, and lobster changes the bill. Tables are arranged by WhatsApp. Baraka's own site.
Maisha Resto & Bar at Zuri Zanzibar, in Kendwa, is a hotel restaurant beside the pool, cooking Southern European and Indian Ocean dishes, with dinner by reservation. Zuri's guest information sheet, dated 28 August 2026, says visitors staying elsewhere must enquire about its rules and applicable fees beforehand. Request a table in advance, because outside guests are not guaranteed access on arrival. Zuri's dining description and dated guest information.
The south-east: The Rock in context, and the shore opposite. The Rock, off Michamvi Pingwe beach, is a restaurant on a rock in the sea: at high tide you leave by boat, and at low tide the sand often opens up to walk across, though it depends on the day's tide. Boat landings can be delayed by up to 20 minutes. Its menu carries the highest prices on this page. Its reservation page requires a dining booking, refuses drinks-only reservations and warns of limited space and tide-related landing delays, so do not build a tight transfer around lunch. The booking calendar shows the actual sittings, so choose your sitting there. Official reservation guidance.
Lukmaan, for Swahili buffet. Lukmaan is a long-running, open-air Swahili restaurant in Stone Town where the dishes are on display and you choose at the counter. It received the Zanzibar Tourism Award for best local dining in 2018 and 2019, and reviewers most often praise its biryani, pilau and octopus curry. We could not find hours or prices on an official site, so check recent reviews or call ahead.
Boho Social at Upendo Beach, on the same shore, is the land-based alternative, with music, cocktails and a direct view of The Rock. It serves all day, with seafood, international dishes and marked vegetarian and vegan options. A table and use of the pool or lounge are separate: the lounge is offered by day pass. How to experience it
Right for you if… / choose elsewhere if…
- Emerson Spice — right if you want one long, set evening in the old town. Choose elsewhere if you want a quick or light dinner, or someone in your party avoids seafood.
- The Rock — right if the setting is the point and you can give it an unhurried lunch. Choose elsewhere if you only want drinks, have a tight airport or ferry transfer, or are unsteady on wet sand and boat steps.
- Maisha at Zuri — right if you are staying at Zuri or have arranged access in advance. Choose elsewhere if you prefer to walk in on the night.
- Lukmaan — right for a local, buffet-style meal with a wide range of Swahili dishes. Choose elsewhere if you want a set or quiet evening, or a fixed price before you sit down.
- Baraka and 6 Degrees South — right for a relaxed, order-as-you-go meal. Choose elsewhere if you want the price fixed before you sit down.
Keep a dining evening near your base where possible. An unhurried meal loses its appeal if you are watching the driver's clock. The getting-around guide covers transport; the south-east peninsula guide explains Pingwe's wider setting.
Read menus for the whole party. Vegetarian labels do not establish allergy controls, and a seafood tasting menu needs a conversation before you reserve. Use dietary requirements on safari for the wider journey brief. Find out whether tax, service, deposits and outside-guest fees are in the quoted total.
During Ramadan, do not assume ordinary daytime service or visitor access at hotels; see Zanzibar during Ramadan. Dress for the town or village you cross, following Zanzibar dress and photography etiquette, and get permission before photographing staff, kitchens or other diners.
Why it matters to how we travel
For Nobu's story-led journeys, dinner belongs to the place and the pace of the day. A thoughtful island stay leaves room for independent kitchens as well as a hotel table, without a long drive every evening. Tell a travel designer which meals matter to you, and find out which reservations, dietary communication and transfers your journey proposal includes.
