Choosing among the best hotels in Kiwengwa is mostly about what you want around you when the lagoon drains: a big resort's pools and restaurants, a small hotel above the water, or a lodge that turns the tide into the point.
This list covers three neighbouring stretches of the north-east coast: Pwani Mchangani to the north, Kiwengwa, and quieter Pongwe to the south. Entries are ordered by fit for purpose, not price. Facts come from each hotel's own website; where sources disagree, the page says so. Still choosing between this coast and the north? Read Matemwe or Kiwengwa first.
How to choose
Tide and pool. The north-east lagoon drains a long way at low spring tides, so sea swimming follows the tide table. Bluebay makes a virtue of it with low-water reef walks. Treat the pool as your main swimming place. How Zanzibar's tides work explains the rhythm; if swimming from the beach at most states of the tide matters most, use our list of hotels with swimmable frontage instead.
Which stretch. Pwani Mchangani and Kiwengwa are resort country, often all-inclusive, so the hotel's restaurants matter. Pongwe suits people who want a handful of rooms and a cove. Inland lies the Kiwengwa–Pongwe Forest Reserve; the red colobus story explains why those forests matter.
Children and age rules. The big resorts welcome families. The Island Pongwe is adults-only, and Tikitam Palms admits guests aged 16 and over. Either rule is worth having in writing. For island-wide comparisons, see the family hotel list and the adults-only list.
Why we do not rank by guest scores. Booking sites rank by review scores. Several of the most-reviewed hotels here, Melia Zanzibar among them, are left out because their official pages could not be read, so ranking by purpose is the fairer order.

The list
Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa
Signature · beachfront resort, Kiwengwa · best for families who want everything on site
Bluebay sits in 30 acres of gardens with more than a thousand palms and shares 582 metres of beach with its sister resort, Sultan Sands. Its FAQ notes that guests can walk out to the reef at low tide. There is a spa, diving and several restaurants. Look elsewhere if you want a small, quiet hotel; this is a busy resort.
Sultan Sands Island Resort & Spa
Signature · beachfront resort, Kiwengwa · best for resort facilities in a thatched-bungalow setting
Sultan Sands has round, thatched rondavels with Zanzibari furniture, in three room types from garden-facing Baobab rooms to Bahari rooms near the sand. It shares the beach, spa, tennis court and dive centre with Bluebay. The catch is one-way: Bluebay guests can use Sultan Sands, but Sultan Sands guests cannot use Bluebay's facilities.
Kappa Senses Zanzibar
Private Collection · beachfront villa resort, Pwani Mchangani · best for families who want a private pool
Kappa Senses' website says it has 85 villas and suites, including two-bedroom pool villas of about 120 square metres: rare space for a family on this coast. It has three pools and a kids' club with daily activities for children of all ages. The main restaurant runs all-inclusive, with four à la carte restaurants alongside. Look elsewhere if you want to walk out to village restaurants in the evening.
Neptune Pwani Beach Resort & Spa
Signature · beachfront resort, Pwani Mchangani · best for variety on a long stay
Neptune Pwani describes itself as newly renovated, with 194 rooms and suites in carved wood and Swahili style. Restaurants range from Swahili buffets to Italian, Indian and Thai, and there is padel tennis and horse riding along the shore. With nearly 200 rooms, where your room sits is worth knowing if quiet matters. Look elsewhere if you want a quiet small hotel.
Waridi Beach Resort & Spa
Signature · beachfront resort, Pwani Mchangani · best for a simpler resort stay
Waridi's website describes 62 rooms in six categories, from classic and family rooms to bungalows and suites, around one ocean-view pool. Meals are buffet-led, with Mediterranean and Zanzibari dishes, and there is a spa, yoga and water sports. Choose it for a smaller, simpler resort. Look elsewhere if several pools and restaurants matter.
Diamonds Mapenzi Beach
Signature · beachfront resort, Kiwengwa · best for a pool villa inside a chain resort
Mapenzi belongs to the Diamonds hotel group; its site lists garden rooms, sea-view suites and pool villas with private pools. The trade-off is how little detail the group publishes: the room count, board basis and villa layout are the details to have before choosing it.
Shooting Star Lodge
Elevated · small hotel above the beach, Kiwengwa · best for couples, and families in a cottage
Shooting Star says it has 23 rooms set above the water with direct access down to Kiwengwa beach. Infinity pools look out over the ocean, the Monsoon Villas have private pools, and two-storey family cottages give children their own floor. Look elsewhere if anyone in your party finds steps difficult; the views come from height.
Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort
Elevated · beachfront villas, Kiwengwa · best for all-inclusive without wristbands
Tulia has bungalows and villas, some with private pools and some seafront. Its website says it has 16 bungalows and villas. It runs what it calls a true all-inclusive: premium drinks and à la carte dining, without wristbands or bills to sign. Airport transfers are included. Look elsewhere if you want a quiet adults' retreat: it has waterslides and many families.
Pongwe Beach Hotel
Elevated · beachfront hotel, Pongwe · best for a sheltered cove
Pongwe Beach Hotel has run for more than twenty years on a private cove sheltered by an offshore reef, with thatched bungalows and an infinity pool above the sea. At low tide, the reef walk is the activity. Look elsewhere if you want resort facilities.
The Island Pongwe
Elevated · adults-only island lodge, Pongwe · best for couples who want to switch off
The Island Pongwe is built on a natural coral rock, with six villas according to its own site. Its site says that, depending on the tide, you will need a canoe to reach it. There is no air conditioning, no television and no music from devices, which is the point. Look elsewhere if you need air conditioning or easy access with heavy luggage.
Tikitam Palms Boutique Hotel
Elevated · boutique beachfront hotel, Pongwe · best for couples who want air conditioning
Tikitam's room information gives 16 and over as its age rule, so it is adult in mood rather than strictly adults-only. Its homepage does not state the rule, so confirm it in writing. Its rooms and villas are decorated with local antiques and crafts; rooms have air conditioning and open onto the garden and pool. Snorkelling gear, paddleboards and bicycles are included. Look elsewhere if you are travelling with younger teenagers.
If none of these fit
For small lodges and the shortest boat ride to Mnemba, see the best hotels in Matemwe. For beaches that are usually easier to swim from, the north tip is better: see Nungwi or Kendwa. The hotel overview sorts the whole island by purpose.
A few hotels on this stretch are not listed. We could not read Melia Zanzibar's own pages in October 2026, so ask for its room count, board basis and beach entry before you choose it. Kiwengwa Beach Resort publishes too little detail to compare fairly; ask the same three questions. A travel designer can check current details for any of them.
In the villages, dress modestly (dress code guide); in the lagoon, keep clear of seaweed lines, which are someone's crop (the seaweed farming story).
Planning it with Nobu
A travel designer can match the hotel to who is swimming, who is resting and how you want evenings to feel, and plan around the tide times for your dates. A travel designer can say which of these properties Nobu works with when planning your journey.
This coast suits you if you want a resort or a small hotel with a pool, sunrise over the reef and little reason to leave. Choose Paje instead if you want independent restaurants and nightlife on foot; it is tidal too. Choose Kendwa instead if you want a beach that is usually easier to swim from; it still depends on the tide.
