A private island in Zanzibar can be private without being yours alone. A lodge whose shore is reserved for its guests gives a different holiday from an island occupied only by your own party. Decide which you mean before comparing photographs.
This selection is ordered by fit for purpose, not price. Mnemba comes first because it answers the literal wish: a small island, a single lodge, a barefoot rhythm. Three Pemba resorts follow in a separate group for travellers whose real wish is distance from a busy beach. Two other names surface in any search for a private island here, Chumbe and Chapwani; both are explained below rather than listed.
Picture the evening rather than the aerial view. On Mnemba, dinner is with the same handful of guests every night and the sea is the only neighbour. If that sounds like the point of the trip, read on. If you are still deciding what kind of luxury you want, start with Luxury Zanzibar, the person-led version of this question.
How to choose
Shared island or sole use. Ask for a written proposal that says exactly what is reserved: your banda, the lodge, or every guest facility on the island, and who else can be present. A private dinner on the beach does not mean sole occupancy. If privacy mainly means your own house and pool, the villa and private-house shortlist is the better starting point.
Frontage and the pool question. Mnemba's lodge sits on the ocean and has no swimming pool, so the sea is the only place to swim; the swimmable-beach hotel list compares frontage across the island.
Evenings. An island lodge suits people who want to spend every evening at it; if restaurants and a walk after dinner matter, read Pemba or Zanzibar for the wider island comparison.
Party and arrival. Mnemba welcomes children, but no more than two under 12 may be on the island at any one time, and its single Family Banda sleeps two adults and two children. Boat transfers depend on the weather and do not run after dark. Fundu Lagoon is not suitable for children under 12 and cannot accept flight arrivals after 17:00. Plan the flight around the boat, not the other way round.
Right for you if one lodge and its shore can be the whole holiday: snorkelling off the beach, the same quiet faces at dinner, nowhere you need to be. Not for you if a pool is essential, you want evenings out, or you are travelling with more than two children under 12.
The list
The private-island choice
&Beyond Mnemba Island
Private Collection · island, Mnemba Island · best for a lodge stay on a separate island
Eleven palm-frond bandas and one Family Banda sit along coral sand, and the island is shared only by lodge guests and staff. It suits travellers who want the shore and reef to be the holiday. The trade-off is company: a banda booking shares the island with other guests, and whole-island use is a separate written arrangement. Families are welcome, with a cap on young children and a WILDchild programme for them.
If distance matters more than an island — Pemba coastal resorts
These stays offer distance from a busy beach holiday without a small island of their own. Including them does not imply the whole property is available for your sole use.
Fundu Lagoon
Elevated · beachfront, Pemba · best for a boat-arrival coastal retreat
Thatched tented rooms run from hillside to beach level, and the suites have private plunge pools. There is no suitable road access: the resort's own boat takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on the tide, and it cannot accept flight arrivals after 17:00. Choose it when arriving by water is part of the appeal, and choose the room position carefully. It is a coastal resort, not an island, and it states it is not suitable for children under 12.
The Manta Resort
Elevated · beachfront, Pemba · best for an unusual night at sea
Manta's offshore Underwater Room has a submerged bedroom, a lounge above the waterline and a sundeck on top. It is a single specialist room belonging to a coastal resort with a pool area, not a natural island. Choose it for that room rather than assuming every room shares the experience. The resort's own pages disagree on whether the newer room is open yet, so confirm that before you plan a trip around it.
The Aiyana Resort & Spa
Elevated · beachfront, Pemba · best for villa accommodation within a coastal resort
The Aiyana sits at Pemba's northern edge, about 30 minutes by light aircraft from Zanzibar, with individually designed villas facing the Indian Ocean. It suits someone who wants a villa within a resort rather than a small island. The trade-off is that a private villa does not make the shore or resort yours. Ask for the villa's layout and what is shared, including the pool, before deciding how private it will feel.
At a glance
| Property | Island or coast | Pool | Children | Arrival constraint | Sole use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| &Beyond Mnemba Island | Own island | No | Welcome; max two under 12 on the island | Weather-dependent boat; none after dark | Not with a banda booking; written proposal |
| Fundu Lagoon | Pemba coast | Plunge pools in suites | Not suitable under 12 | Boat only; no flight arrivals after 17:00 | No |
| The Manta Resort | Pemba coast | Pool area | Family welcome | Transfer by arrangement with the resort | No |
| The Aiyana Resort & Spa | Pemba coast | Mentioned only in guest reviews | Family welcome | Flight to Pemba | No |
Verdict: only Mnemba is a private island; choose a Pemba resort when distance matters more than having a whole island around you.
If none of these fit
If you want your own house rather than an island address, go to the villa shortlist. For a wider range of hotel formats, use Zanzibar hotels by purpose.
Chumbe is a different conversation. It is a protected coral island whose own website describes eco-bungalows run on solar power and rainwater collection; it is about conservation first and a stay second. See the Chumbe Island page for the experience.
Chapwani is the other island people find. It is a sliver of land in the Zanzibar Channel just off Stone Town, about 0.7 km long, and it holds a British naval cemetery from the First World War. A small lodge there is listed by a travel profile site and is reached by a short boat ride. Its current details should be confirmed for your dates, so treat it as a lead to check rather than a recommendation.
Thanda Island, often named among East Africa's whole-island hires, is not in Zanzibar: it lies between the Tanzanian mainland and Mafia Island.
Misali Sunset Beach and Gecko Nature Lodge, both on Pemba, are left out for now because their current offer is unclear.
Planning it with Nobu
Nobu's story-led approach starts with what privacy would change for you: fewer decisions, uninterrupted time together, or space for a whole household. That gives the accommodation brief a purpose beyond its address, and it tells you which terms to ask for in writing: sole use, child limits and the arrival plan.
Mnemba also sits inside a marine conservation area with its own visitor fee, reported as US$25 per adult and US$10 per child aged 5 to 15; check the current fee for your dates. The island is a workplace as much as a retreat: lodge staff, community and conservation rangers and a resident marine biologist work there, the team patrols the beaches for nesting green turtles, and the lodge offers a visit to a nearby community. Treat the reef as theirs to protect, and keep a respectful distance from turtles on the sand.
