Right for you if you are a couple wanting fewer children around and more privacy. Not for you if you are travelling with under-16s, or need certainty of no children at all on your dates.
In Zanzibar, adults only usually means a minimum guest age, and that age is often 16 rather than 18. Several hotels also lift the rule when one party takes the whole property. This shortlist reads each hotel's own published rule and is ordered by fit for purpose, not price. The main list holds only hotels publishing an adults-only policy; two family-welcoming hotels that still suit a honeymoon follow separately. For the broader shape of a honeymoon, read Zanzibar honeymoon; this page decides between hotels.
How to choose
Age rule. Decide whether 16 is acceptable or you want an over-18 property. Whole-hotel exclusive use can override the ordinary rule, which matters if another party could take the property for your dates. An age limit cannot tell you how sociable or restful an evening will feel.
Your own space. A private plunge pool creates a different day from a shared pool. The exact room category matters: a photograph of a beachfront villa says little about what a garden room includes.
Sea access. The east-coast lagoon retreats at low water, so a pool is a useful priority on that coast. Use the swimmable-beach hotel list and tides guide for property-specific frontage.
The evening outside. Choose between a hotel-centred stay and somewhere you leave for dinner. The Nungwi–Kendwa comparison, Paje–Jambiani comparison and peninsula guide cover the surroundings. An adult atmosphere inside the gate does not control the neighbouring beach.
One caveat for every hotel below. Rules are as each hotel published them in October 2026; ask for the age rule for your dates in the reservation.

The list
Adults-only by published policy
#### Safaya Luxury Villas - Adults Only Elevated · beachfront, Nungwi · best for an over-18 private-pool villa
Safaya's own FAQ describes an adults-only retreat for guests aged 18 and above, with a private swimming pool at every villa and a beachfront position in Nungwi. That combination answers both halves of most honeymoon briefs: no teenagers, and a pool you share with no one. Its limit is scale and setting. It is a small villa property, so evenings centre on your own terrace and the restaurant, with Nungwi's livelier strip close by if you want company.
#### Hotel Riu Palace Zanzibar Elevated · beachfront, Nungwi · best for an all-inclusive adults-only resort
RIU's official page calls this a hotel for over 18s and badges it Adults Only. It sits in a large garden in the island's north-west, with beach access down a staircase, several bars and a full all-inclusive plan with daily activities and evening entertainment. Choose it if you want an over-18 rule with resort facilities and plenty going on. Intimacy is the cost: this is a large resort, and the age rule removes children, not other guests.
#### The Palms Zanzibar Private Collection · beachfront, Bwejuu · best for private-pool villa living
The Palms' official FAQ describes an adults-only hotel with a minimum guest age of 16, adding that children of all ages may stay when the entire hotel is taken exclusively. Its villa page confirms private plunge pools and terraces facing the ocean. Choose it for a stay built around your own terrace and meals at the property. The rule admits older teenagers, and the beach in front is tidal.
#### Zawadi Hotel Private Collection · beachfront, Michamvi · best for an ocean-facing retreat
Zawadi publishes the same rule as its sister hotel: 16 and over, with children of any age on whole-hotel exclusive use. Booking websites may show a check-in age of 18 for Zawadi; treat that as a booking-site listing, not the hotel's own rule. Its villas have private plunge pools, and the hotel describes a low-cliff setting above a sandy beach. The view and personal outdoor space suit a couple planning to stay put. Be clear about that elevated setting: a beachfront classification does not mean every terrace opens onto sand.
#### Kilindi Zanzibar Private Collection · beachfront, Kendwa · best for pavilion privacy
Elewana, which runs Kilindi, describes it as predominantly couples-only with a minimum age of 16, and accepts family groups only when the hotel is booked exclusively. Kilindi's own room page markets its two-bedroom villas to families with children aged 18 or older. The white-domed pavilions have private plunge pools, with garden or ocean views and a beach along the property. It suits couples who want a quiet, design-led west-coast stay where the sunset does the entertaining.
#### The Z Hotel Elevated · beachfront, Nungwi · best for a boutique hotel with shared facilities
The Z Hotel's FAQ says its rooms and pool are not equipped for children under 16, and that management sometimes accepts younger families in low and medium season. The official homepage confirms steps to Nungwi beach, an oceanfront infinity pool, restaurants and a rooftop bar. It suits couples who want hotel facilities and an evening out of their room. It is the weakest fit here when the absence of younger children is essential.
#### Kupaga Villas Boutique Hotel Elevated · beachfront, Jambiani · best for an adults-focused boutique stay
Kupaga's homepage calls it an adults-only boutique hotel on Jambiani beach; its official pages do not state a minimum age. The amenities page lists a pool, bar and restaurant, and mentions live music next door on Saturdays. It is a sensible choice when an adult guest policy matters more than a private villa, and a less obvious one if quiet Saturday nights are part of the plan.
Honeymoon-friendly, families also welcome
#### Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa Private Collection · beachfront, Paje · best for privacy without an age rule
White Sand's official resort rules welcome guests of all ages. The beachfront villa category has a private pool, separate living space, rooftop terrace and direct beach access. Couples comfortable sharing the wider resort with families can still make their own terrace the centre of the stay.
#### &Beyond Mnemba Island Private Collection · island, Mnemba Island · best for a beach-banda honeymoon
&Beyond's accommodation page includes a Family Banda designed for children, so this is a family-welcoming island lodge. Thatched bandas sit on the sand facing the ocean. It suits honeymooners who want to settle into one place rather than explore a village each evening; reserving a banda does not make the island private.
If none of these fit
If you are travelling with children, start with the family hotel shortlist. If swimming decides it, use the frontage research linked above before narrowing by age rule. For a city chapter, the Stone Town hotel list compares a different kind of stay.
Couples on the north-east coast or in Pemba: several hotels there are worth checking for an adults-only stay, but their published age rules have not yet been confirmed, so none is listed above. Ask a travel designer to check them for your dates.
Adults-only hotels on a Muslim island still sit beside village life. Swimwear belongs at the pool and on the hotel beach; cover shoulders and knees when you walk into the village, and keep affection discreet in public. The Zanzibar dress code guide sets out the detail.
Planning it with Nobu
Nobu's approach starts with the day you want to have: a private terrace, company at dinner, or a lodge you rarely leave. That preference, set beside each hotel's real age rule, narrows this list quickly and puts the remaining choice where it belongs, on the room and the coast.
