Matemwe and Kiwengwa sit about 13 km apart on the north-east coast, with Pwani Mchangani between them, about 8 km north of Kiwengwa. The sand is white, the coast faces east into the trade winds and the sunrise, and it is quieter than Paje. If swimming at most tides matters most, see Nungwi or Kendwa. What it has is Mnemba, the small private island and atoll a few kilometres offshore whose reef is the best-known boat-snorkelling site on the island, and two very different ways to stay near it. Matemwe grew up as a fishing village with lodges between the palms. Kiwengwa, and the Pwani Mchangani strip north of it, is where the island's large resorts were built.
The village pages — Matemwe and Kiwengwa — cover each on its own terms. This page decides between them, and notes where Pwani Mchangani, in the middle, fits.
The detail
Tides on this coast. Both villages sit inside the same fringing reef, so at low tide the water retreats a long way across sand and seagrass, and hotels on both beaches are built around pools for those hours. The mechanics and timing are on Zanzibar tides explained.
Matemwe: small lodges and the Mnemba run. Matemwe is the nearest mainland village to Mnemba Atoll, and snorkelling boats leave from its beach. The shorter crossing means an earlier arrival at the reef and an easier return if the sea picks up. Visit the atoll lightly: never stand on or touch coral, keep a wide berth from turtles, and go early rather than with the mid-morning crowd of boats. The conservation fee you pay funds the marine conservation area that protects the reef. The reef morning itself belongs to Snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll.
The beach here is a working one. Ngalawa outriggers are hauled up on the sand and women gather shellfish on the flats at low water; give boats and gatherers room, step around nets, and ask before photographing anyone. Most stays are lodges and villas of 4 to 25 rooms. Properties on the stays list include Matemwe Lodge, the adults-only Kasha Boutique Luxury Hotel and Zanziblue Boutique Villas, all at the Elevated tier. Two places are larger: Matemwe Beach Village (40 rooms, Signature) and The Mora Zanzibar (80 rooms, all-inclusive), the choice for guests who want Matemwe's position with resort facilities.
Kiwengwa: the resort coast. Kiwengwa's beach is long, straight and lined mostly with resorts of 100 to 160 rooms: Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa and Sultan Sands Island Resort & Spa, both Signature and all-inclusive, and Melia Zanzibar at Elevated. These have several pools, evening entertainment and grounds you can spend a day inside without noticing the tide. A few boutique places of 17 to 30 rooms, such as Shooting Star Lodge and Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort, sit among them, but the big houses set the beach's character. Pwani Mchangani continues the pattern with Kappa Senses Zanzibar at Private Collection. Full lists are in best hotels in Matemwe and the north-east and best hotels in Kiwengwa, Pwani Mchangani and Pongwe.
Mnemba access from each. Boats also go to Mnemba from Kiwengwa and Pwani Mchangani. The ride is longer: expect roughly 30 to 45 minutes from Kiwengwa, against about 20–30 minutes from Matemwe, with Pwani Mchangani between the two. The Kiwengwa figure is an estimate, so confirm it with the boat operator. In the kusi months (June to October) this exposed coast has more chop, and the shorter crossing is the more comfortable one.
Getting there and around. Both are about an hour from the airport on the road through the island's centre, with Matemwe a little further; published transfer times vary. Stone Town is a comfortable day trip from either, and the north tip is around forty minutes beyond Matemwe.

Planning it with Nobu
Matemwe suits a reef-first, small-lodge stay; Kiwengwa suits children or the ease of a resort after a dusty safari. Neither is a compromise if it is chosen on purpose. For a small-lodge feel with resort facilities, The Mora in Matemwe and Tulia in Kiwengwa are the two places that bridge the gap, and a travel designer can weigh them against your dates.
Is it right for you?
Matemwe is right for you if snorkelling Mnemba is near the top of your list, you prefer a lodge of 4 to 25 rooms, and you are content with the beach, the reef and a book. Less ideal if you want nightly entertainment, a choice of restaurants, or a big pool complex for children.
Kiwengwa is right for you if you are travelling with children or a wide age range, you want all-inclusive ease and plenty to do within the gates, and the tide going out is something you would rather not think about. Less ideal if you came for a sense of place; the village is behind the resorts and far less of it is visible from the beach.
Pwani Mchangani is right for you if you want Kiwengwa's resort format a little further north and a Mnemba crossing that sits between the two — it splits the difference.
Neither is right for you if you need to swim at most tides; if that matters most, see Nungwi or Kendwa.
