From the water, boats reach shorelines where animals drink and birds feed.
A launch cruise, run by a park, lodge or operator, takes one to two hours on the Nile, the Kazinga Channel or Lake Ihema, and two to three on the Rufiji. Paddled trips are rarer: two to two and a half hours at Momella and Manyara, longer at Bunyonyi.
In East Africa most boat safaris are motor launches. Paddled canoes run on a few lakes, among them Bunyonyi, Small Momella and, when the water allows, Manyara.

Where and when
Uganda's Nile and Kazinga Channel, Rwanda's Lake Ihema, Tanzania's Rufiji (camps shut about mid-March to early June; October water can stop boats); roughest July–October in Uganda.
How long, how fit, who
A launch is one to three hours, easy for most, families included. Canoeing means paddling, from age 8 with one operator. Not for multi-day river paddling.
What it costs
Low, plus park entry. Uganda's launches: US$30 a person (2024–26 tariff). Arusha and Manyara canoeing: US$20 per 2 hours, children US$10, plus VAT, 2023/24. Confirm for your dates.
Rules on the water
Uganda's Marine Notice (August 2026) requires life jackets worn on outboard-engine boats and kept within reach on conventional vessels. On Bunyonyi, wear one and do not swim between islands.

Can you canoe on Lake Naivasha or Lake Baringo?
Boat trips on both lakes are by motorboat; to paddle, choose Bunyonyi or Small Momella.
How close do boats get to hippos?
No park publishes a distance, so a good crew keeps the boat well clear: hippos are aggressive. In 2020 one capsized a fishermen's boat at Naivasha.
Should we take a launch or a canoe?
A launch to sit back and watch; a canoe to paddle on still water.
Do government warnings cover Uganda's boat trips?
The UK does not advise against travel to any part of Uganda (8 October 2026) but records two tourists and their driver killed by terrorists in Queen Elizabeth National Park in October 2023. The US rates all of Uganda Level 4, Do Not Travel (4 June 2026), citing crime, health, terrorism and unrest; the WHO declared Uganda's Ebola outbreak over on 27 August 2026.
