01Mara in the morning
Cold air, long grass and a conservancy track before the sun climbs.

Safari & island / East Africa
From Mara grassland to Serengeti kopjes, crater walls and an Indian Ocean tide.
The journey
This is the long arc: a conservancy beside the Maasai Mara, Serengeti plains, Ngorongoro’s crater wall, then a Zanzibar coast. Each landscape changes the scale before the island changes the rhythm.
The border is the hinge. You fly from the Mara through Nairobi and Arusha, then continue into Tanzania next morning. After safari, another flight carries you east for four nights governed by tides rather than tracks.
Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar suits travellers with two full weeks who want one continuous East African journey and accept a demanding transfer day. It is not an efficient choice for ten nights or less. For safari only, stop with Kenya & Tanzania; for one-country simplicity, choose Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar.
Three safari landscapes and one island finish, with the sequence and comfort level shaped on your terms.

A route with room to breathe
Nairobi → Mara → Wilson → Arusha → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Zanzibar. The final road transfer to Arusha and island flight are described below, rather than drawn as one direct flight.
A sense of the days
A night in Nairobi leads to a morning flight into the Mara, and the road from the strip can double as an early game drive. Lunch, a rest and an afternoon drive shape that day and the next two, ending at camp by early evening. A conservancy may offer guided walks, with age limits set by each camp; ask its rules for walking outside.
An early departure from the Mara matters, because a later flight can leave too little time at Wilson for the onward flight to Arusha. Hold your passport, visa, inbound insurance and yellow fever certificate where you can reach them, ready for the entry steps. Small-aircraft times shift with routing, so plan nothing for the evening. Check each airline’s baggage allowance before you pack.
After a morning flight from Arusha you land inside the park, and the ride to camp may include game viewing along the way. Full days start early with tea or coffee and a drive; take a packed lunch for a long day out, or return to camp to rest. Park hours are fixed, so the day ends at camp by early evening.
Leave the plains after breakfast: the road to the highlands takes much of the day, so keep your seatbelt fastened all the way. Mornings on the rim are cool and cloud may hide the view, so bring a fleece. Go down early next day, as the descent gate closes in the afternoon; the crater floor is for vehicles only, as walking there is not permitted.
After breakfast comes the long drive back towards Arusha; wear your seatbelt throughout. Ask which island flight your proposal uses. The earlier one needs a prompt start but leaves daylight for the coastal transfer; the later one eases the start, and UK advice is to avoid driving outside major towns at night. Keep the first evening free.
The tide table sets the plan, and on the east coast the lagoon draws far out at low water, so swim when it returns. Choose one guided outing, such as a spice farm or a boat morning, and put on the lifejacket supplied on any boat. Sea conditions change, so keep boat plans flexible. Ask your hotel about evening walks on the beach.
Typically one night Nairobi, three Mara, one Arusha, three Serengeti, two Ngorongoro and four Zanzibar: fourteen nights in all.
Clear from the beginning
Every journey is quoted in full, with no surprises.
Good to know
Fourteen nights leave two full days in the Mara, two in one Serengeti region, a full crater day and three full island days, around the travel days. Wilson is the planned Kenya–Tanzania connection; exact flights or a charter need confirmation before the route is fixed. A northern Serengeti variation lengthens the journey to Ngorongoro, so reconsider the transfer or add time. Non-residents entering mainland Tanzania first need NIC inbound cover under current rules; continuing to Zanzibar does not itself require a second mandatory policy. Personal travel cover remains separate.
You experience the Mara–Serengeti ecosystem on both sides of the border, add Ngorongoro’s enclosed landscape, then finish at sea level. The route earns its length through contrast; it only makes sense when you can give it about two weeks.
The route can target likely seasonal areas, but rain moves the herds and no crossing is promised. Keep to designated tracks and let animals pass. A northern Serengeti choice also changes the road journey to Ngorongoro; it is not a simple camp substitution.
June to September usually offers a useful dry-season overlap. January and February can suit southern Serengeti, but Kenya’s August 2026 outlook extends Narok rains into January 2027. October is transitional; check both countries’ forecasts and exact property openings.
Yes, with a disciplined split: one Nairobi, three Mara, one Arusha, three Serengeti, two Ngorongoro and four Zanzibar. Shorten below two weeks and the border day takes too much space; remove either Kenya or Ngorongoro instead.
An early Mara flight returns to Wilson for the Arusha connection, then an Arusha night protects the morning Serengeti flight. Confirm international check-in time and both sectors together. In seasonal gaps, a charter or extra Nairobi night may change the cost or length.
Avoid it if you dislike small aircraft, have fewer than fourteen nights or want no transit-heavy day. Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar removes the international safari crossing; Kenya & Tanzania removes the island and gives more time to the parks.
Government advice, checked October 2026: the US rates Kenya Level 2, issued 28 July 2026, and Tanzania Level 3, Reconsider travel, issued 31 October 2025. The UK advises against travel to named parts of Kenya and, in Tanzania, only within 20 km of the border with Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. Read the full advice before travel.
Tanzania asks for a yellow fever certificate from travellers arriving from a country on its risk list, and Kenya is listed. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go
The route works year-round in different ways; migration movement, rain, island tides and flight schedules all shape the final sequence.
Aug / Main dry season
June to September often offers drier safari roads and island weather. Herds may gather farther north, but timing varies; a northern Serengeti stay needs a different onward transfer plan.
