Which are the best hotels in Nungwi for your stay?

The best hotels in Nungwi, by purpose, are The Z Hotel for a boutique stay with an evening bar, Flame Tree Cottages for independent cottage living, Sandies Baobab Beach Zanzibar for evening entertainment and Hotel Riu Jambo for a family resort. Essque Zalu Zanzibar suits couples who want suite space on a north-east cove, and Nungwi Dreams by Mantis suits pool time and a rooftop evening. The real split is the shore: Sandies, Riu Jambo and The Z Hotel sit on the north-west frontage, Essque faces a north-east cove, and Nungwi Dreams has a tidal beach that reveals sandbanks at low water.

Start here

A cottage veranda and a resort pool make different holidays, even when both addresses say Nungwi. These best hotels in Nungwi are ordered by fit for purpose, not price, using exact names and tiers from Nobu's stays data and each property's own website for facilities. The tiers are Nobu's categories, not star ratings.

The stays data lists 18 Nungwi properties. We chose 8 that together cover the main formats — boutique, cottage, social resort, family resort and cove suites — and whose own websites publish enough to describe them fairly.

Nungwi is still a working fishing village before it is a resort address. Boats land their catch on the sand, dhows are built and repaired by hand along the shore (dhow building in Nungwi), and the lanes behind the hotels are people's homes. Beach vendors and boat sellers are part of the shoreline; a polite "no, thank you" is enough, and the dress code applies once you step off the hotel's sand into the village.

The wider Nungwi or Kendwa decision belongs on its comparison page. Here, the choice is the hotel you return to after the beach.

How to choose

Frontage first. North-west sand and a north-east cove behave differently, and Nungwi Dreams openly describes a shoreline that changes with the tide. Note where guests enter the sea at low water. The swimming-frontage shortlist and the tides guide cover the mechanics.

Then sound and the walk home. Consider where your room sits relative to bars, entertainment and the village lanes, and how you return after dinner outside the gate. Where to eat handles the tables.

Then who is travelling. For detailed policies, see family hotel choices, honeymoon and adults-only stays and Ramadan.

The list

The Z Hotel

Elevated · beachfront, Nungwi · best for a boutique stay with an evening bar

On the north-west coast, The Z Hotel publishes steps to the beach, an oceanfront infinity pool and a rooftop bar. The hotel's own FAQ says guests can swim at any state of the tide, since the sea never goes out very far. Its usual minimum age is 16, with exceptions for younger children in low and medium season, and it closes in April and May. Skip it if you travel with young children in high season. Official hotel and FAQ.

Flame Tree Cottages

Essential · beachfront, Nungwi · best for a veranda and independent cottage living

Flame Tree's individually styled cottages sit in tropical gardens, with verandas, air-conditioned ensuite rooms, a garden pool and beach access through the gate. It welcomes couples and families. Choose it when the room and garden are part of the pleasure of the day. Request how far the water sits from the gate at low tide. Not for you if you want scheduled entertainment. Official cottage hotel.

Langi Langi Beach Bungalows

Essential · beachfront, Nungwi · best for choosing between garden and sea outlooks

Langi Langi offers garden-view rooms and sea-view suites, with a pool and an ocean-facing restaurant. It is the useful Essential-tier choice when the outlook matters: decide whether you want garden outside your door or sea beyond your balcony, then request that exact category. Pass it by if you want a resort with kids' facilities and a nightly programme. Official hotel.

Sandies Baobab Beach Zanzibar

Signature · beachfront, Nungwi · best for a social resort with evening entertainment

Sandies sets its rooms among gardens and baobabs on the north-west frontage, with direct beach access, a pool and a pool bar facing the shore. Its amphitheatre hosts evening shows, dancers and musicians — a clear choice for travellers who welcome organised company. Skip it if you are an early sleeper; if you choose it anyway, request a room away from the amphitheatre. Official resort.

Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort

Signature · beachfront, Nungwi · best for a resort centred on gardens and pools

Royal publishes tropical grounds, several swimming pools, a spa and an open-air gym, with room categories facing the gardens or the ocean. It suits travellers who want plenty of places to spend the day without leaving the property. The grounds are spread out, so request a room near the pool or beach you will actually use. Think twice if you want the intimacy of a small hotel. Official amenities.

Hotel Riu Jambo

Signature · beachfront, Nungwi · best for families wanting a resort activity setting

RIU places Jambo on Nungwi Beach on Zanzibar's north-west coast, with outdoor pools, a children's pool, family rooms and the RIULand kids' club, which runs daily activities for ages 4 to 7 and 8 to 12. Choose it when having facilities and dining on site is the point. The site does not state a separate-bedroom entitlement, so request the sleeping layout you need. Not for you if you want an independent, quiet stay. Official property page.

Essque Zalu Zanzibar

Elevated · beachfront, Nungwi · best for a cove setting and suite accommodation

Essque sits in a north-east cove at Nungwi, with suites and villas facing garden or ocean and a pool as the focus of the day. Choose it for space and a different side of the cape. This frontage does not behave like the north-west sand, so find out how sea entry works at low water. Think twice if beach swimming from the north-west sand is your priority. Official overview and accommodation.

Nungwi Dreams by Mantis

Elevated · beachfront, Nungwi · best for pool time and a rooftop evening

Nungwi Dreams publishes infinity pools, a sea-view restaurant and a rooftop Sky Bar. Its amenities page is candid about the beach: high water brings swimming, while low water reveals sandbanks and coral farther from shore. Choose it if pool time and an ocean-facing evening appeal more than beach swimming. Not for you if you want to swim from the beach at low tide. Official amenities.

If none of these fit

If the locality itself feels wrong, return to the coast guide, beach choices or the Kendwa hotel list. For the wider travel brief, read luxury Zanzibar or affordable Zanzibar.

For sole use, continue to villas and private houses. For an island setting, use private-island choices. The hotel overview connects these narrower lists.

Planning it with Nobu

Nobu's story-led approach starts with the day you want to have: your own veranda, company around the pool or an evening outside the gate. Bring those preferences alongside your dates and room requirements, and we will shape the shortlist around them. Nobu sets out which of these properties it can offer for your dates in the proposal.

A few things worth knowing

Good questions.
Straight answers.

The details matter. Bring anything else into your planning conversation.

Which Nungwi hotels in this list have cottage or bungalow accommodation?

Flame Tree Cottages offers garden cottages. Langi Langi Beach Bungalows distinguishes garden rooms from sea-view suites; request the actual category rather than inferring its layout from the name.

Which Nungwi hotel explicitly advertises an evening show programme?

Sandies Baobab Beach Zanzibar publishes entertainment in its amphitheatre. Request the programme and your room's position if bedtime matters.

Does every Nungwi hotel face the same shoreline?

No. Sandies identifies north-west frontage; Essque describes a north-east cove, and Nungwi Dreams explains its changing tidal beach. Compare the specific entry rather than the locality label.

What should I request with a Nungwi room quotation?

Request the exact category, beds, outlook, position relative to entertainment and route to the beach. Add a dependable land route if independent evenings matter.

Which Nungwi hotel in this list closes for part of the long rains?

The Z Hotel closes in April and May, according to its own FAQ, so check its opening for your year before choosing dates.
