The Nile under pressure
Walk to the falls where the river narrows, roars and drops through spray.

Forest & safari / Uganda
From the Nile’s gorge to chimpanzee forest, savannah and Bwindi, in eleven to twelve nights.
The journey
This is Uganda drawn as a long north-to-south passage. The Nile squeezes through Murchison’s gorge, then the road turns towards Kibale’s layered forest and the primate calls above Kanyanchu.
Savannah opens again at Queen Elizabeth before the final approach to Bwindi, where steep forest folds hide mountain gorillas. The journey works because eleven or twelve nights give the long transfers room rather than pretending Uganda is compact.
Choose this route for breadth, not a quick gorilla visit. You need patience for long drives, fitness for two forest walks and comfort with government advice. In Uganda a licensed Ugandan partner provides the guide and 4x4, not our own. A shorter Rwanda journey suits travellers who want one trek and less road time.
Nile, forest, channel and mountain slopes: four Ugandas connected slowly, and shaped around your pace.
Moments along the way
Walk to the falls where the river narrows, roars and drops through spray.
Ride the launch upstream to the foot of the falls, scanning both banks.
03Follow a ranger beneath Kibale’s canopy towards a habituated chimpanzee community.
Board a launch on the channel that links Lake Edward and Lake George.
Cross dirt country towards Bwindi, with heavy rain able to change the route.
06If trackers locate the family, stay quietly for one hour at ten metres.
Where you’ll stay
From Essential park lodges and forest camps to Private Collection stays overlooking the Nile or canopy, comfort can vary by stop. Location matters more than flourish: early activities and long transfers make the right side of each park valuable.

A route with room to breathe
Entebbe → Murchison Falls → Kibale → Queen Elizabeth → Bwindi → Entebbe. The full Uganda loop is road-led, with optional flights only after current schedules are confirmed.
A sense of the days
Leave Entebbe early and allow most of the day to reach your lodge around Murchison Falls.
Use a full day for the launch towards the falls and a drive through open northern grassland.
Travel at least a full day towards Kibale, with changing roads and a proper comfort stop.
Track from Kanyanchu and return to your forest base. Continue to Queen Elizabeth the next morning for the savannah chapter.
Cross the southern sector on dirt road, accepting that rain may change the route and arrival time.
Trek on your first full day, two to seven hours in all; keep a spare day, then allow eight to ten hours back to Entebbe.
Two Entebbe nights bookend the route: two or three Murchison, two Kibale, two Queen Elizabeth and three Bwindi make eleven or twelve.

Good to know
This Uganda gorilla safari follows the western arc: Murchison’s Nile, Kibale’s chimpanzee forest, Queen Elizabeth’s channel and savannah, then Bwindi. Murchison to Kibale takes a full road day; Mweya to Buhoma is mainly dirt. Nobu books gorilla permits separately, and UWA requires payment in full at booking: the foreign non-resident adult rate is US$800, or US$600 in April, May and November. Confirm every fee for your travel date because the full published park-entry tariff ended in June 2026; the chimpanzee permit is also extra.
Because gorillas become one chapter rather than the whole trip. Murchison adds the Nile, Kibale adds chimpanzee forest and Queen Elizabeth adds savannah and channel water. The trade-off is several long road days across eleven or twelve nights.
No. Rangers and trackers search for habituated groups, but wild animals choose where they move. If a gorilla family is found, the visit lasts one hour. UWA’s Kibale page describes high contact rates, but the journey makes no guarantee.
June to August and usually January to February offer drier conditions, though the forest can stay wet. December is more variable in the south-west. April, May and November have a published lower permit price, with no rescheduling; confirm current rates.
Allow eleven to twelve nights: one Entebbe night at each end, two or three at Murchison, two each at Kibale and Queen Elizabeth, and three at Bwindi. The final Entebbe night separates the long return transfer from your international flight.
The US Level 4 covers all of Uganda, national parks included. The UK has no warning, but urges particular caution near the Congo border, where this route’s Queen Elizabeth, Ishasha and Bwindi days run. It records two tourists and their driver killed by terrorists in Queen Elizabeth in October 2023.
Choose a shorter route if long drives or demanding forest walks do not suit you. Gorilla trekking requires age 15 or above. UWA sources disagree on Kibale’s minimum age, so confirm chimpanzee eligibility before planning this full route with younger travellers.
Government advice, checked October 2026. The US rates the whole of Uganda Level 4, Do Not Travel (4 June 2026), for crime, health, terrorism and unrest, and lists national parks among places terrorists have targeted. The UK has no warning against travel to any part of Uganda, but says terrorists are very likely to try attacks, urges particular caution in western Uganda near the Congo border and notes routine security escorts on gorilla treks. The positions differ, and both pages also cover Uganda’s 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act; read both before deciding.
Forest walks can be long, steep and muddy. UWA asks you not to track with a cold or another infectious illness, because gorillas and chimpanzees can catch it. Malaria, yellow fever and vaccination advice depends on your health and route. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go
Uganda can be visited throughout the year. Drier spells often ease forest walking, while road condition and rain still matter on every departure.
Jul / Main dry spell
June to August often brings drier ground for forest walks and savannah tracks. Demand rises, so permits and the order of stops need early coordination.
